Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse | | Ashley Hudak, Athletic Communications Graduate Assistant

Early drought leads Marauders to their first loss of the season

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — No. 22 New Haven dug the Millersville Marauders into a 6-0 first quarter hole, and despite a comeback charge, they could not defy the odds, falling, 17–12.

After the first quarter Millersville and New Haven scored 11 goals a piece to show that the Marauders could hang with nationally ranked teams.

The Chargers dominated early with only a late goal from Mary Moraca to prevent a first-quarter shutout. The Marauders started to find their rhythm in the second quarter. They scored three quick goals, two from Ashlyn Simonetti and one from Kayleigh Dunn. New Haven's lead was cut to 6–4 and Millersville sporadically applied pressure to try and disorient the Chargers. The Chargers managed to mitigate the defensive swarm and scored three goals. Both teams managed one more goal for New Haven to enter halftime with a 10–5 lead.

The Marauders outscored the Chargers in the third quarter 5–4 to cut the difference to four goals, 14–10. As the clock wound down, Millersville grew impatient and overly aggressive, drawing three yellow cards. This ultimately soiled their chances to generate offensive success as they played in a man-down scenario for six minutes. Millersville clocked two late goals but it was not enough.

Millersville re-enters conference play against No. 3 West Chester on the road on March 19 at 4 p.m.

THOUGHTS FROM HEAD COACH MIKE FAITH
  • Overall thoughts: "I thought we came out a little slow. The Chargers capitalized on four of our turnovers in the first quarter to limit our offensive possessions. We were down 6-1 going into the second quarter. The team battled back and had the game within reach a couple of times but we fell short. New Haven was a good team and they are nationally ranked. We fought hard and lost, but it is a testament to what we are trying to do here."
  • Key takeaways: "Adjusting to the draw is the biggest change we need to make. We could apply some different strategies but ultimately that's on me. After the first quarter, we played differently on defense and forced some New Haven turnovers and poor shots.
  • How to preach a short-term mindset: "I thought the girls reset after the first quarter. We will all watch the film and prepare for West Chester and the rest of the games this season. We have come a long way and are still going places. I can see they believe it and this game proves we can hang with ranked teams but the team has to do it for a full sixty minutes."
  INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Millersville was out shot 34–24.
  • KC O'Neill logged nine saves.
  • This is the first time this season Millersville scored off all their free-position shots, going 2 for 2.
