Millersville battles Kutztown to a hard-fought 0-0 draw

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Millersville women's soccer team showed grit and determination, earning a hard-fought 0-0 draw against PSAC East leader Kutztown.

Millersville displayed a strong offensive presence in the first half, earning their first corner kick just five minutes into the match but failing to convert. The Marauders earned four corner kicks within the first 17 minutes and seven total in the half but were unable to capitalize on those opportunities.

Senior Isabel Coy recorded the first shot for Millersville, carrying the ball coast to coast before her attempt was saved by Kutztown's goalkeeper. The Marauders finished the half with four shot attempts, with Coy's effort being the only one on goal.

Kutztown also maintained offensive pressure, earning five corner kicks in the first half and taking six total shots. Millersville goalkeeper Sabrina Zimmerman tallied three saves during that stretch. The first half concluded with the score tied at 0-0.

The Golden Bears came out strong in the second half, earning a corner kick within the first few minutes. Kutztown finished the half with seven corner kicks but was unable to capitalize on any of them. Millersville's defensive line of Melanie Love, Olivia Stone, Elvira Remstam, and Maia Iannuzzi played a key role in limiting the Golden Bears' offensive opportunities. Goalkeeper Zimmerman secured the clean sheet with four saves.

Senior Caroline Wood nearly gave the Marauders the advantage in the 60th minute, but her shot narrowly missed off the crossbar. Millersville's final opportunity came off a late corner kick but was unsuccessful.

Following the match, Millersville moved to 4-5-3 on the season. With four games remaining, the Marauders will look to finish strong as they currently sit three points behind West Chester, which holds fourth place in the PSAC East standings. Millersville returns to action on Saturday, traveling to East Stroudsburg for its final road game of the season. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

THOUGHTS FROM HEAD COACH MATT PROCOPIO
  • The girls came out with a lot of fire to begin the game -- what do you think fueled that? "A lot of things to play for and we spoke in the week about our mentality so I think there are a lot of factors in play. I was really happy with the way we came out and played overall".
  • Even though it wasn't a win, how important was it for the team to stay composed and fight until the end? "Definitely wanted to get three points but it was a positive performance and we have to build on that".
