MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Despite the rainy forecast, the Millersville women's soccer team made a statement as it triumphed past Goldey-Beacom, 5–1.
The Marauders were on high alert from the jump as they made it their mission to dominate. With no hesitation, Maddie Zielke dribbled the ball up the sideline and crossed it into the box to find the head of Lia Francis who netted the first goal of the season in the sixth minute. The Marauders came knocking on the door nearly three minutes later with another goal from Francis, compliments from Olivia Fleurant.
In the 15th minute, Millersville provided service in the box and a failed clearance from Goldey-Beacom resulted in Francis floating the ball over the goalkeeper into the side netting to go up 3–0 early. Starting and debuting as a freshman, Francis scored her first hat trick and placed the Marauders in a comfortable position early.
"I thought it was great to come out and score three goals early," head coach Matt Procopio said. "We did some good things for our first game of the season. Hopefully we can build off of our start. Our freshman have looked good. A hat trick on your debut is definitely a great way to start it for Lia. We're looking forward to them continuing to grow as we progress through the season."
Millersville retained a majority of the possession to close out the first half and did not look to slow down in the second either. Off a quick offensive transition, Isabel Coy took on two defenders by her lonesome to send a rocket into the far side netting to extend the lead to 4–0.
Nearly six minutes later, Goldey-Beacom tallied its first goal of the season. Sia Diakos crossed the ball into the box finding Ryley Dixon's feet who placed the ball on a one touch in the back of the net, closing the gap 4–1.
Urgency grew from the Lighting as the clock dwindled down, but it could not manage to get past the Marauder defense. In the last two minutes of play, Shelby Derkosh lost possession in the Lightning's defensive third, but immediately pressed to win the ball back. With the slightest angle and impressive precision put the icing on the cake tallying the fifth and final goal.
The Marauders improve to 1–0 on the season whereas the Lighting fall to 0-2. Millersville will look to defend its home turf at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11 against PSAC East rival Kutztown.
Head coach Matt Procopio's thoughts going into conference play revolve around the team's mindset. "Our mindset for every game must be that we are playing a championship game. Points in conference are vital and you won't earn any of them easily, much like a championship. "
