Millersville's fast start is not enough to stop the Golden Bears

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Millersville women's soccer team was edged by the No. 25 Kutztown Golden Bears in the first conference match-up, 2-1.

All the action came in the first half, starting with Kutztown almost striking first. An offside call in the seventh minute of play nullified a goal by Kutztown, keeping it a scoreless game. On a quick counter, nearly 30 seconds later, Isabel Coy expertly dribbled through several defenders to place the ball in the back of the net, giving Millersville an early 1-0 lead.

Minutes later, Corinne Morgan netted the equalizer, putting the Golden Bears on the board. With pace, the Golden Bears were awarded a corner kick, which translated into the game-winning goal. Katelyn Economopoulos provided service in the box, where her teammate Isabella Rossetti headed the ball off the crossbar and into the net.

With plenty of time remaining, neither team could find the back of the net once more to alter the outcome of the game.

The Marauders will hit the road for the first time this season, facing Mansfield on Saturday, Sept. 4, at 1 p.m.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Coy scored her second goal of the season
  • Sabrina Zimmerman had a season high of four saves.
  • Kutztown out-shot Millersville, 13-4.

THOUGHTS FROM HEAD COACH MATT PROCOPIO

  • Team's efforts tonight against a ranked team: "Our effort was there which it always has to be against anyone but especially a ranked team. They continued to fight the entire game which is positive."

  • How to adjust going in the future to try and maintain the lead: "Restarts were key in today's game as we faced many throw-ins and corner kicks. We need to be better in those moments in order to maintain a lead. Most of their chances came from restarts. Ultimately the goal from a corner ended up being the winner."

  • Key takeaways from tonight's game: "We can play with a top teams. Technically we must be better. We have to improve at restarts."
