Marauders fall in close match against District of Columbia

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Millersville women's tennis team was narrowly defeated by District of Columbia on Saturday afternoon, falling 4–3.

Historically a tough opponent for the Marauders, District of Columbia has taken the last five meetings between the two teams, with the Marauders last win in the series history coming in 2009. The Firebirds only used two doubles tandems and played five athletes in singles play, so the Marauders were able to win the doubles point by splitting the two matches that were played. In Millersville's second pairing, Lauren Hayes and Luci Consigliere took on Claudia Bahamon Lopez and Lina Benjelloun, winning 6–2.

The Marauders got a point in singles play from the Firebirds only using five athletes, but only came away with one win in the second slate. Sophie Lanius defeated Nadja Zmukic in the fifth seed, winning in comeback fashion 4–6, 6–4, 7–6.

Millersville has two duals remaining in the fall season, with its next matchup against Mount St. Mary's at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 2 in Emmitsburg, Md.

POSTGAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH MATT HELSEL
  • "I thought we played well, and it could have gone either way. Luci and Lauren were phenomenal in doubles, and Sophie did a great job finishing off her match in singles."
