Marauders fall in double overtime to St. Thomas Aquinas

SPARKILL, N.Y. — The Millersville field hockey team dropped its first game of the season, falling in a dramatic 2–1 double overtime loss to St. Thomas Aquinas.

Despite generating a couple of penalty corners early in the game, it was the Spartans getting on the scoreboard first. Nicola Van Vuuren broke the scoreless tie just five minutes into the game off an assist by Katelyn Cerrato to give St. Thomas Aquinas the lead out of the gate. The Marauders had chances to tie it, hitting a post and forcing Madeline Schaefer to make some saves before Emma Ruley broke through five minutes into the second frame. A pass from Caitlin Wassermann sprung Ruley up field as she was able to beat the keeper to even the score.

Millersville controlled the majority of play throughout the game, leading in shots 19–7, shots on goal 9–5, and penalty corners 20–3, but the Spartan defense refused to break. Morgan Lennon had a pair of chances in the middle frames, hitting a post and Schaefer stopping the other, and the Spartan goalie also stood tall against a flurry of shots from Wassermann and Saige Shine early in the third as well. The Marauders kept the pressure on in the fourth but couldn't find the go-ahead tally as regulation came to a close.

Right off the opening whistle for overtime, the Marauders controlled play in the attacking end. They were able to get a pair of penalty corners quickly, but still could not break through the Spartans defense. They pushed and had the majority of possession and chances for the first 17 minutes of the overtime periods, but St. Thomas Aquinas pushed back and converted on an odd-man rush the other way with just over a minute before a shootout, with Van Vuuren getting her second of the game.

Millersville will look to bounce back as they return home to take on New Haven at noon on Sunday, Sept. 15 at Biemesderfer Stadium.

GAME NOTES
  • The win is the Spartans' first in the all-time series against Millersville, with the Marauders taking the previous three matches.
  • The 20 penalty corners were the most for the Marauders since their game against Mercy on Sept. 28 last year. They also had 23 corners in their last game against the Spartans.
POSTGAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH SHELLY BEHRENS
  • General thoughts on the game: "We started slow, we just need to be smarter and execute. We had plenty of chances today, but credit to the Spartans for pulling away. I'm still proud of the kids for the fight and effort they gave today, we got better as the game went on. We just have to execute our game plan next time and go from there."
  • On being stymied by the Spartans' defense: "I know we're better than how we performed today. I know we're talented and able to execute, but sometimes you have to learn these lessons to become better down the road."
  • On preparing for New Haven: "We'll think about this game for the next 24 hours and go from there. They're disappointed in some things, but that's just sports. It's not always going to go our way, but what matters more is how we react. I want us to react in a way that serves us well to learn from this game and move forward."
