Softball completes two last-chance comebacks in critical sweep of Mansfield

MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Millersville Marauders proved Monday afternoon that the Cardiac Kids are alive and well. They entered the top of the seventh down on the scoreboard in both games and emerged with a doubleheader sweep. The visitors took game one 6-4 and game two 5-3. Aleese Angelo and Alex Schaefer both matched Marauder career records on the triumphant day.

GAME ONE:
Schaefer went seven strong innings and allowed four runs while striking out nine Mountaineers. She was given a 3-1 lead in the third inning, but the hosts chipped away and took a 4-3 lead heading into the seventh. That deficit was no match for the Marauders, as they would tally three runs in the frame and take home the 6-4 victory.

Victoria Fuss started off Millersville's final chance at the plate with a single through the left side. After a fielder's choice produced the first out, Angelo's third single of the day put runners on first and second for the ever-reliable Gabi Turner. A big double steal moved both to scoring position, and Turner came through once more with the big hit. The veteran singled up the middle and brought home both runners to retake the lead. Gabby D'Ottavio gave Schaefer some insurance with another base hit to center to drive in Turner.

The top of the lineup carried the offense throughout the game, as the 1-2-3 of Kendra Bumgardner, Angelo and Turner each scored two runs and tallied seven of the team's 11 hits. Amazingly, they had no extra-base hits in the game.

GAME TWO:
The Marauder's second comeback of the day was even more dramatic than the first. Morgan Crutcher got the start in the circle and cruised until the fourth inning, when a three-run home run put the Mountaineers on top. Those would be the only runs Crutcher allowed in her complete-game performance. The game entered the top of the seventh with the score still at 3-1 despite the Marauders applying pressure in the fifth and sixth innings. They stranded five runners on base in those two frames alone.

Two walks started that magical inning for the visitors. Marli Schreiner singled to bring home the first run and cut the deficit in half. Fuss came to the plate after a strikeout and tied the game at three. A fielders choice after a pitching change set the stage for Angelo, who could match the the all-time hits record for Millersville and take the lead with a single swing. With runners on second and third, she did just that, singling to center field and giving the visitors a 5-3 lead. Crutcher closed it out in the bottom of the seventh and secured the two-win day.

Bumgardner's fourth-inning single extended her hit streak to nine games. She's gotten a hit in every contest played in April except for game one against Bloomsburg on the sixth.

GAME NOTES
  • With her first inning single in game one, Angelo became the second player to reach 200 career hits in a Millersville uniform. She finished the day tied with the all-time leader Brittany Smith, who finished her career with 204.
  • The Marauders' 4-0 record against the Mountaineers this season has nearly leveled the all-time score. The tally now sits at 51-53 in favor of Mansfield.
  • With the two wins today, Millersville claims sole possession of fifth place in the division. Bloomsburg has two games in hand with a 13-9 conference record to Millersville's 11-9 mark. The Marauders are a game up on Kutztown, which has a 10-10 conference record.
  • Schaefer matched Brianna Andraos for most appearances in a Marauder career with number 109 in game one.
POSTGAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH JEN PROBST
  • Overall thoughts: "These two wins were so important. It's always tough to win on the road, especially at Mansfield. Getting two wins to start this long week of games sets the tone. We left too many runners on and talked about having one more quality at bat each inning. If we did that then we wouldn't have to fight from behind. But if we do have to come back, we are going to give any team a run for their money because this group has no quit in them. I'm so proud of their resilience and mental toughness."
