Angelo and Schaefer break records but softball drops a pair to West Chester

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Millersville Marauders looked to continue their momentum after completing two seventh-inning comebacks on Monday against Mansfield. The visiting Golden Rams stopped the hosts in their tracks with a sweep. They won game one 9-6 and game two 9-7 and gave the Marauders a taste of their own medicine with late-inning surges in both contests.

GAME ONE:
The Golden Rams jumped on Millersville starter Alex Schaefer early with a three-run first inning. Schaefer would settle down over the next couple of frames, eventually being removed in the fifth in favor of Morgan Crutcher.

Kendra Bumgardner got one of those runs back with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first. Tori Fuss would do the same in the third inning, the beginning of a five-run frame for the Marauders. Carly Vaughan walked next and Aleese Angelo followed with a record-breaking single to left field. It was career hit 205 for Angelo, passing Brittany Smith for the top spot on Millersville's all-time leaderboard.

Gabi Turner singled to center field and brought home Bumgardner to knot the game at three. After a fielder's choice, Sam Fried laced a ball to left field to bring home Turner and give the Marauders the lead. A hit batter and a fielder's choice would plate two more Marauders in the inning and the game headed to the fourth with the score 6-3 in favor of the hosts.

The Golden Rams tagged the pair of Schaefer and Crutcher for all nine of their runs in the game, as they tallied four runs on two hits in the inning. Millersville loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with two outs but couldn't get the breakthrough hit and fell 9-6.

GAME TWO:
The Marauders had to overcome an early deficit in the latter half of the twin-bill as well. The Golden Rams put three runs on the board before the Marauders came to the plate in the bottom of the first. They would answer back in the second inning with a three-run home run off the bat of Taylor Campagna. The senior deposited the first pitch she saw over the scoreboard in left field to make the score 4-3.

West Chester got one more run in the fourth and two in the fifth to extend its lead to four. Millersville clawed back once more, however, responding with two runs on four hits in the fifth and two more scores in the sixth. The Marauders took advantage of two Golden Ram errors in the sixth to score their runs. It was the visitors who would have the last laugh, bringing home two more runs in the seventh and winning the game 9-7.

GAME NOTES
  • The two losses drop the Marauders down to sixth in the PSAC Eastern Division standings with a conference record of 11-11.
  • With her double in game two, Angelo tied Heather Lutz for first on Millersville's all-time doubles list with 53.
  • Schaefer's appearance in game two made her the team's all-time leader in appearances with 110.
POSTGAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH JEN PROBST
  • On the idea of moving Fuss up in the lineup: "The best part about Tori being in that nine spot is that you have somebody who can turn the lineup over. I'm looking for someone who can be a leadoff hitter and be competitive because she comes up in some of the big situations and turns the lineup over which has set us up for a lot of these late-game wins."
  • On Angelo's record: "Aleese breaks so many records and has done so many great things that I think sometimes we don't celebrate them enough, so it was awesome to give her that recognition today. I'm really proud of her."
UP NEXT
  • The Marauders hope to bounce back when they travel to Lock Haven for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
