MILLERSVILLE, Pa - Despite the 16-9 loss against Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), the Marauders made a valiant effort to try and comeback, as they scored five goals in the fourth quarter. The Marauders suffered their first loss of the season and are 2-1 in non conference play.
Most of the Marauders action came in the final quarter, as they scored five goals. The late goals began with 11 minutes remaining, as Jodylynn Cadden drove and dodged to the net to secure the Marauders fifth goal of the game. Shortly after Cadden's goal, Mary Moraca, with her persistent drive to goal, netted the sixth goal of the game with a bouncing shot placed in the top left and side of the net.
IUP had the response as they answered with four goals within the span of three minutes. Victoria Labrecque, with speed, managed to get around her defender with a pump fake and placed the ball high over the keeper's head to make the score 16-7. With the Marauders trying to close the gap, Labrecque assisted Ella Linthicum, who made a backdoor cut to score goal number eight. Less than a minute later, Rachel Keeney, in transition with the ball, drew three defenders her way and dumped the ball to a wide open Clare Roussey, who netted the ninth goal of the game.
Not enough time remained on the clock for Millersville to get job done as the Crimson Hawks walked away with their first win against the Marauders since 2017.
Rachel Keeney, Linthicum, and Labrecque all netted a pair of goals. A majority of the goals scored today came from driving and dodging efforts as the Marauders only logged three assists on the day.
Morgan Scott made nine saves, bringing her overall record for the Marauders in net now is 2-1, while currently holding a 8.67 goals against average along with a 0.536 save percentage.
As a unit, the Marauders went 13-15 on clears, did not give up any goals in the third quarter to IUP, and tallied 16 ground balls opposed to IUP's 14.
THOUGHTS FROM HEAD COACH KAITLYN HAFDELL
- Thoughts on the game today: "It wasn't the outcome we wanted. It is something we can learn and grow from to be prepared for the next game. You need these hard losses every now and then to grow as a team."
- Key takeaways: "One thing we can take away and continue using is our defensive strength. Yes the score wasn't what we wanted it to be but we had a lot of good caused turnovers and defensive strategy. Our offensive transition was a little smoother in the second half because of our defenders getting those loose ground balls. Going forward, they are strong and will continue to remain strong but going forward, we will just have to tweak a few little things."
- Looking forward to the game against Dominican: "I am excited to see how we learn from this and step up for that game. It will be a true testament of can we really strive to improve. What I am looking forward to on Wednesday is having that comeback from this loss and that we are a good team."
