Marauders fall victim to walk off home run at North Greenville

GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Marauders entered their final day in South Carolina looking to continue mashing like they did yesterday, this time against the North Greenville Crusaders. Millersville ended up dropping both ends of the doubleheader 8-6 and 6-2, with the first contest coming down to the hosts' final at bat.

GAME ONE:
Allyson Black put the Marauders on the board first, sending a 1-1 pitch over the right centerfield fence to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. The second inning blast was her first of the season after clubbing three long balls last year. The hosts answered right back in the bottom half of the inning with three runs of their own, two of them unearned due to a throwing error. The Crusaders added two to their advantage in their next at bat, one of which was due to another Marauder miscue.

Down 5-1 in the top of the fourth, Millersville looked to respond, and respond they did. With two on and two out, Kendra Bumgardner came through with a single into left field, plating the second Marauder run. The white hot Aleese Angelo stepped in next and deposited a base hit into center field, clearing the bases and cutting the deficit to one.

After the hosts added a run in the bottom of the fifth, Millersville pulled even in the top of the sixth. This time it was Gabby D'Ottavio who came up with two on and two out. With the count level at 2-2, the senior drove a pitch into the left center field gap to score both runners and knot the game at six. They held the Crusader offense down in the bottom of the frame but a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh walked it off in favor of the hosts, 8-6.

Angelo, Bumgardner, D'Ottavio and Gabi Turner all enjoyed a productive first game at the dish despite the loss, with each recording two or more hits. Angelina Saverase tossed well in the circle despite the defensive miscues, allowing one earned run over 2.2 innings pitched.

GAME TWO:
The Marauders received a strong start from Bumgardner in game two, pitching into the fifth inning and allowing two earned runs over 4.2 innings pitched. For the fifth time in its last six games, the Millersville offense struck first to give her a 1-0 lead. That was in the top of the third, when Turner scored on a wild pitch. The next Marauder score would come in the seventh inning, when Victoria Fuss walked with the bases loaded to bring the deficit to 6-2. They were held to just one hit through the first six innings before tallying three singles in their last at bat.

GAME NOTES
  • This was the first ever meeting between these two teams, so the all-time record stands in favor of the Crusaders at 2-0.
