CHARLESTON, W.Va. – In the midst of a tough spring break stretch, the Millersville Marauders looked to bounce back in the rain at Charleston. However, the only respite came in the form of a canceled game two after the Golden Eagles slugged their way to a 10-4 victory.
GAME ONE:
Millersville ace
Alex Schaefer got the ball for game one. After allowing one run in the first on a two-out long ball, the senior tossed a perfect second to send it to the Marauder half of the third, where they struck back. With the bases loaded and two outs,
Hailey Watlington hung in there and was hit by a pitch to bring a runner home.
Gabby D'Ottavio came to the plate next and doubled to bring home two more Marauder runs for a 3-1 lead.
Another Golden Eagle home run, this time driving in three runs in the bottom half of that inning, put the hosts on top by one. A third Charleston round-tripper in the fourth made it 6-3.
Aleese Angelo continued her recent power barrage with a solo shot in the fifth to cut into the deficit, but the Marauders went on to lose 10-4.
A few Millersville players enjoyed quality days at the plate despite the loss.
Kendra Bumgardner continued her solid start to the season, going two for four with a double. D'Ottavio drove in two runs with her lone hit of the day, and
Gabi Turner and
Carly Vaughan both tallied base knocks as well.
Game two was canceled due to the rain.
GAME NOTES
- With the loss, the Marauders' all-time record against the Golden Eagles falls to 1-3. Their only win came in the first meeting between these two programs back in 2009.
- After tallying another run batted in with her home run today, Angelo moved one closer to the Millersville career mark. She now has 135 career runs batted in, just four short of the record of 139 set by Faith Willenbrock.
- A bright spot in this recent stretch is the quality of teams the Marauders are taking on. They have yet to face a team with a record below the .500 mark. In fact, Charleston has just one loss this season.
UP NEXT
- The Marauders close out their spring trip with one last doubleheader in West Virginia. They travel to Fairmont State on March 7 for a 2 p.m. start.
