ABOUT THE GAME

  • The Millersville Marauders (8-13, 6-9) travel to Bloomsburg to take on the Huskies (6-16, 4-12) looking for the season sweep after defeating them at home on Jan. 13. The visitors will also have the opportunity to extend their advantage over Mansfield for fourth place in the Eastern Division. The Marauders currently sit a half-game ahead of the Mountaineers, who possess a 6-10 conference record.

SCOUTING THE MARAUDERS

  • Millersville returned to its winning ways from the beginning of the calendar year after narrowly edging out Shippensburg 57-53 on Feb. 7. The Marauders used a strong second half in which they won both quarters to down the bottom-dwelling Raiders. It was the third time in the past four games in which they have won the third period  by five or more points. Their defense held Shippensburg to just 11.8% in the third. The visitors scored eight points on 17 attempts, making only two.
  • Makiah Shaw again paced the Marauders in scoring once again against Shippensburg with 13 points. She's reached double digits in seven of the last eight games and is averaging 15.9 points per game over this stretch; that's moved her season average to 13.1, good for twentieth in the conference. Her field goal percentage is also fourth in the league at 50.7%. The forward's been doing work on the glass all season as well, tallying a rebound in every game.
  • Morgan Mahoney had her best defensive game of the season against the Raiders, contributing five of eight total team blocks. That's the second most the Marauders have had in a game in the 2023-24 campaign, trailing only their nine from the first Shippensburg game on Jan. 10. It was Mahoney's return after a brief absence and those five swats represented a new career-high. The sophomore six-footer has led the team in blocks 10 times this season, almost double the second-place finisher. That interior dominance has raised her blocks per game average to 1.3, good for fourth in the conference despite averaging only 17.9 minutes per game.
  • One team statistic that has been incredibly accurate in predicting the outcome of games is the points off of turnovers battle. The Marauders are undefeated when tallying more points off of giveaways than their opponent with a 6-0 overall record. When failing to do so, they are 2-13.
  • The Marauders emerged victorious by a score of 62-59 last time these two teams met on Jan. 13. Shaw was massive, pouring in a regulation career-high 25 points on nine of 13 from the field. Jabria Ingram was similarly important, tallying nine assists to just three turnovers. On the defensive end, Brenna Ortwein had a standout performance with five steals.

SCOUTING THE HUSKIES

  • Bloomsburg enters looking for its third consecutive victory after dropping nine straight in the month of January. Last time out, the hosts did the Marauders a favor in the division standings by defeating Mansfield 69-62 on Feb. 7.
  • The Huskies are led offensively by a pair of double-figure scorers: Katie Starr and Maddie LaFrance. Starr has nearly doubled her points per game output from last season (10.4 to 18.5) and ranks second in entire PSAC in that category after leading it for most of the season. She's also doing so efficiently, as she's tops in the conference in field goal percentage at 56.5%. The junior forward contributes mightily on the defensive end as well, evidenced by her team-leading marks in rebounding (8.5), and steals and blocks per game (2.2 and 0.8, respectively). Starr ranks third in the conference in rebounds per game and fifth in steals per game.
  • LaFrance, the other half of that pair, averages 10.4 points per contest. She's been a threat from outside all season, averaging over six three-point attempts per game and shooting 32.7% on them. The native of Harrisburg, Pa. ranks sixth in the PSAC in three-point percentage and is tied for second in three-pointers made. She carried the offensive load for Bloomsburg against the Mounties, netting a season-high 22 points on 50% from the floor.
  • The Huskies' point guard is junior Ella Kale, who's fourth in the conference in assists per game at 4.6. However, she's cooled off a bit in recent days, only averaging 1.8 dimes per contest over the past four games. Kale rarely leaves the court and is tops on Bloomsburg with 33.2 minutes per contest.

SERIES HISTORY

  • Millersville will have a unique opportunity to go ahead in the all-time series against the Huskies with a win, as the rivalry currently sits knotted at 46 wins apiece. It has been a tale of long streaks for both programs at different times over the more than 50 years of competition. The Marauders won nine in a row from 1980-1985 before the Huskies answered right back by going 18-2 over the next 20 matchups. In the 2000's, Millersville held a clear upper hand, winning 18 of 22 contests including a 16-2 span from 2002 to 2009.
