ABOUT THE GAME

  • The Millersville Marauders (7-13, 5-9) host the Shippensburg Raiders (3-18, 2-13) looking to right the ship after having a week off. The Marauders dropped five games in a row to end January after winning their first four contests of the year and now sit a half game behind Mansfield in fifth place.

SCOUTING THE MARAUDERS

  • Millersville enters hoping to get back to its winning ways from the beginning of the calendar year after falling 66-54 to No.14 Lock Haven on Jan. 31. Part of the reason for this stretch is the opponents the team has matched up against. The three teams the Marauders faced as part of their winning streak now sit at the bottom of the PSAC Eastern Division standings (Shepherd, Bloomsburg, & Shippensburg) and have a combined 9-36 record in the conference. The five teams they have met during the losing streak are all in the top six (Lock Haven, West Chester, Kutztown, Mansfield, and East Stroudsburg) and have a combined PSAC record of 46-29.
  • The halftime score is one statistic that has been predictive of the final result in Millersville's contests this season. The team with the halftime advantage has gone on to win in 17 of the ‘Ville’s 20 games thus far. They have a 5-1 mark when leading at half and a 2-12 mark when trailing.
  • The Marauders bucked one trend relating to turnovers against Lock Haven. They recorded their fewest turnovers in a game all season with 11 and won the turnover battle by nine. Even so, the Bald Eagles did a better job of taking advantage of the opposing team's miscues with 18 points off of turnovers compared to the Marauders' 15. Because of that, it was the Marauders' first loss while winning the turnover battle this season. Points off of turnovers has been arguably the statistic most indicative of the outcome of games for the Marauders, as they are 5-0 when outscoring their opponents in this category and 2-13 when failing to do so.
  • Makiah Shaw was a bright spot for the ‘Ville against the Bald Eagles, leading the team in scoring with 21 points on 10 of 17 from the field. She has been tops on the Marauders in points per game for most of the season and has gone to another level over the past seven games. She's reached double digits in six of those contests and is averaging 15.5 points per gameover this stretch; that's moved her season average to 13.2, good for twentieth in the conference. Her field goal percentage is also fifth in the league at 50.2%. The forward's been doing work on the glass all season as well, tallying a rebound in every game. She's also recorded an assist in nine straight contests, a career best.
  • The Marauders should get a boost with the potential returns of Jabria Ingram and Morgan Mahoney. Ingram was instrumental in orchestrating the Millersville offense during its win streak but missed three games prior to the Lock Haven game and was only able to return in a limited capacity against the Bald Eagles. The graduate student is fifth in the conference in assists per game at 4.0 and second in assist to turnover ratio at 1.7. Mahoney has missed the last three contests and ranks eighth in the conference in blocks per game at 1.1 despite coming off the bench for most of the season and averaging just 17.6 minutes per game.
  • The Marauders have already defeated the Raiders once this season. On Jan. 10 they recorded a season-high nine blocks as a team while Mahoney tallied three herself. La'Shyra Williams led the team in scoring with 22 points on 90% shooting and Ingram recorded 12 points and six assists.

SCOUTING THE RAIDERS

  • Shippensburg enters also looking to snap a five-game skid dating back to Jan 20. The Raiders fell to Bloomsburg 63-52 in their last game on Feb. 03. It has been a rough season for them, as they are last in the division with a 2-13 conference record. One of those losses was to Millersville on Jan. 10 by a score of 63-52.
  • The team stats reflect their record, as they are 16th in the conference in scoring offense (54.2 PPG) and 15th in scoring margin (-11.3). A reason for their poor offensive showing is their ranking in field goal percentage; Shippensburg is dead last in that category at 34.2%. Opposing teams are shooting it at 41.8% against the Raiders which puts them 15th. They are also last in the PSAC in assist to turnover ratio (0.5), assists per game (8.9) and steals per game (6.0).
  • Treasure George is the Raiders' go-to scorer, as she's tops on the team in points per game at 14.4; that mark ranks sixteenth in the conference. Prior to her last game against Shepherd on Jan. 29, she was remarkably consistent, reaching double digits in 13 straight games and scoring 20 or more in five contests. The graduate student paced the Raiders in scoring when these two teams met nearly a month ago, pouring in 17 points on six-of-nine from the floor. She's also first on the team in assists per game at 2.2. George may miss this game, however, as she has not appeared since that Shepherd game.
  • Two other important players for the visitors are Bella Chimienti and Taja Colbert, who are both top 12 in the PSAC in minutes per game at 33.8 and 33.2, respectively. They have played the same amount of games during the 2023-24 campaign and netted the same amount of points, leading to scoring averages of 9.1 for each. That number puts them in a tie for second on the team in that category.

SERIES HISTORY

  • 2024 marks year number 102 in this rivalry, by far the oldest in the Millersville Women's Basketball record books. The teams first clashed in a the 1921-22 season, with that first matchup being a 14-15 loss. Aside from a more than two decade stretch between the 1945-46 and 1968-69 seasons in which Shippensburg won 17 of 18 games, it has been an evenly matched rivalry with an all-time record of 50-55 in the Raiders' favor.
  • Shippensburg has held the upper hand of late, however, as they've taken five of the last seven matchups dating back to Jan. 3, 2020.
