Fourth quarter Husky run stymies Marauders

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. — The Millersville Marauders paid a visit to the Bloomsburg Huskies looking to sweep the season series after downing them on Jan. 13. Despite the visitor's best efforts, the hosts ended up evening the series at one apiece by a score of 55-46. A nine-to-zero Husky run over the first 135 seconds of the fourth quarter proved to be the difference.

Madison Grubb found La'Shyra Williams under the basket to open the scoring for both teams. The plan of attack was clear for the Marauders from the outset, as every single one of their points in the initial period came from either inside the paint or the free-throw line. This was a good sign, as Millersville sports a winning record when outscoring its foes in the paint and a 2-9 mark when failing to do so.

The Marauders owned a clear advantage throughout the first six minutes of the second quarter and that could be found in the stat sheet. Defensively, they held the Huskies to just one of nine from the field for two points. They used three-pointers on consecutive possessions from Jillian Crawford to take a 23-17 advantage, the largest of the game for either team to that point. Millersville also grabbed four offensive rebounds to Bloomsburg's 0.

Grubb drained a three on the far-side wing with a little over a minute remaining to give the visitors a 29-21 lead, their biggest of the half. The Huskies made inroads over the final 90 seconds including a buzzer-beating mid-range jumper to cut it to three by the game's midway point.

The Huskies scored six straight coming out of the break and grabbed a 32-29 advantage. The duo of Jabria Ingram and Makiah Shaw stemmed the tide on the offensive end, as Ingram found a rolling Shaw for the easy deuce and stopped the run. All told, the Huskies made six shots to the Marauders' three and exited the third quarter up 39-36.

Bloomsburg took control of the game from the jump in the fourth quarter. The hosts scored nine straight before Grubb knocked down her second three-pointer of the contest. In the end, the deficit proved to be too great and the Huskies claimed the 55-46 win.

GAME NOTES:
  • The Marauders fall back below .500 all-time against the Huskies after evening the score earlier this season. The rivalry now stands at 47-46 in favor of Bloomsburg.
  • Millersville's conference record dips to 6-10 with the loss while Bloomsburg improves to 5-12. The Marauders are now in fifth place, a half game back of Mansfield after the Mountaineers defeated Shepherd earlier today.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Shaw led the Marauders in scoring with 10 points. It's the eighth time in the last nine games that she's reached this mark. She leads the team with 13 such games this season.
  • Brenna Ortwein pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Marauders. Six of those were on the offensive end, making up nearly half of the team's 11. It is the third time the junior has reached double-figures in rebounding this season and sixth in her career.
  • The Marauders recorded seven steals by seven different players.

POSTGAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH KIRA MOWEN:

  • "When we start to care about the little things the bigger things will fall into place. I won't take away from the effort of these women in today's game, however; right now, two things inhibit this program from moving to the next level: pride and discipline. When we start to have a greater sense of pride in our efforts the shots will fall, and the stops will come. Discipline and being held accountable is one thing this program needed. While we have gotten better, how we approach every game needs to be the same. When we are in every game it still needs to stay the same. We lose sight of our value, and our game and team crumble. As we push towards our next game, we hope to see a different, more respectful team on the floor Wednesday."
UP NEXT:
  • The Marauders look to take their second game of the season over the Shepherd Rams when they travel to West Virginia on Valentine's Day. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.
