Hot-shooting Golden Eagles top Marauders

CLARION, Pa. - Cam Kearney scored 29 points, and Clarion sank nine 3-pointers as they led Millersville for 39 of 40 minutes in an 80-71 win in PSAC crossover action Tuesday evening.

Millersville (6-5), led by Aamir Hurst's 7 of 7 shooting for 16 points, had four players score in double-figures, but the Marauders could not keep pace with the hot-shooting Kearney. He made 9 of 13 shots, 2 of 3 from three, and 9 of 10 from the line. Clarion shot 45% from three and 48.1% from the field.

"We were a step slow," said Millersville head coach Casey Stitzel. "We gave up too many offensive rebounds. They started out hot, and we haven't realized yet that we are going to get everyone's best game. We did settle down, but right now we are really inconsistent from a group and individual standpoint. We have to figure out how to play more consistently."

Trey Nelson's 3-pointer a minute into the game gave Clarion its first lead, and they never relinquished it. The Golden Eagles sprinted to an 11-2 advantage, and while Millersville closed the gap to one point on two occasions later in the first half, Clarion ripped off a 12-0 run in the final five minutes of the first half, hitting four consecutive shots and four consecutive free throws and getting nine points from Kearny. That run put Clarion up 41-30 at the break.

Millersville managed to cut the deficit to 70-65 on Jahme Ested's bucket with 1:45 to play, but Kearny provided the answer immediately with a 3-pointer. Millersville never got that close again.

"We had some momentum late in the first half, got it to a one-possession game, and at the end when we got it five, we just needed to make one more play," said Stitzel. "But (Clarion) would get an offensive rebound, and it's these demoralizing plays where we are not playing up to our potential."

Hurst scored his 16 in 20 minutes off the bench. Ested totaled 14 points, five assists, and three steals. Drew Stover scored 14, and Aiden Gair added 10.

"We had a good talk after the game," said Stitzel. "We have to keep holding each other accountable. We show flashes of being a really good team, but we have to do it consistently. It's my job as a coach to figure out how to get us there."

While Millersville has lost three of its last four and four of its last six, all of its losses have been by single digits and two have been in overtime. Clarion's win snapped Millersville's four-game winning streak in the series, and it was its first win over Millersville since 2015.
