Late breakaway helps Marauders triumph over Bald Eagles

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Millersville women's soccer earned a hard-fought 2-1 win over conference opponent Lock Haven Wednesday at Pucillo Field.

The Marauders have consistently scored the game's first goal while dictating the pace. In the fourth minute, Isabel Coy continued that trend. Aalivia Wainwright dribbled the ball with speed up the middle, splitting two defenders, allowing Coy to run onto the ball and expertly one-time the ball low and in the far corner, giving the Marauders an early 1-0 lead.

Millersville dominated possession in the first half, conceding one shot to the Rams while creating eight scoring opportunities.

Lock Haven, shifting momentum immediately in the second, caught Millersville off guard early to tally the equalizer. Just 17 seconds in, the Bald Eagles played a lofted ball in the direction of the box. The ball was flicked on by Evelyn Ciaccia as Bryn Constanzer ran onto the bobbling ball in the box, placing it out of Sabrina Zimmerman's reach, tying the game 1-1.

Feeling urgency, Millersville denied Lock Haven another shot on goal for the remainder of the game. The Marauders persistently served the ball up into the Bald Eagles' defensive third.

With under 10 minutes left, a misplayed ball by the Bald Eagles landed at Aubrey Strohecker's feet. Alone, Strohecker weaved through two defenders and fired a shot that ricocheted off the far post. Undeterred, she followed up her shot for redemption, sealing the game-winning goal.

Millersville competes against Mansfield on Oct. 12 at 1 p.m., honoring the seniors for all their hard work and dedication to the program.

  • Coy currently leads the team with six goals.
  • Strohecker, now with five goals, logged her third game-winning goal of the season.

THOUGHTS FROM HEAD COACH MATT PROCOPIO:

  • Thoughts on tonight's game: "Not our best performance overall. Glad we came away with the win but not how we executed."
  • The team's gritty effort coming back to get the game-winning goal: "It shouldn't have ever came down to coming back had we been more clinical in the first half and if we simply clear the ball effectively from a kickoff."
  • What mindset going into playing Mansfield this weekend: "We need to be more disciplined in our approach. Who or where we play is irrelevant we must play at the highest level possible. No excuses."
  • How much have the seniors helped build the program to where it is now: "Our seniors have done a lot for the program and we appreciate their efforts. They came into a program and were in a conference final. They have been working to get us back there ever since. I am hopeful all of their work pays off as we work to get back there. "
