High-intensity PSAC East match ends in a draw

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - In a high-stakes match, Millersville and East Stroudsburg battled a hard 90 minutes to end in a 2–2 draw.

As the regular season nears its end, every point counts. Millersville sits fifth in the PSAC East, while East Stroudsburg is on its heels in sixth.

The Warriors quickly notched an early goal to take the lead. In the third minute, the Warriors earned a corner kick taken by Millie Smith. After the service, the ball bobbled in the box, rebounding out to Smith at the top of the 18-yard box where she floated a ball over Emma Moss's head to go up 1–0.

Millersville responded urgently as Maia Iannuzzi had a one-touch shot off a cross that went wide of the post. Aubrey Strohecker narrowly missed a goal with her attempt off a corner kick but soared the ball over the crossbar.

Millersville's first goal came in the 30th minute. The Marauders earned a corner kick, serviced by Kiley Marandola. Placing the ball by the penalty area, Madelyn Zielke headed the ball past Emmy Clarkson, the Warriors' keeper to tie the game, 1–1.

Starting with defense, the Marauders' back line caught the Warriors offside. On a quick restart, Strohecker received the ball and sprung Aalivia Wainwright forward who fired the ball over Clarkson's head to take the 2–1 lead in the 49th minute.

Fighting to tie the game, the Warriors were awarded a penalty kick in the 62nd minute from a Marauder trip up in the box. Natalie Schooley stepped up and scored for East Stroudsburg to make it a 2–2 game.

Millersville's final surge came in the last three minutes. A give-and-go attempt between Isabel Coy and Zielke set Zielke up with a shot on target, but Clarkson saved it, resulting in a Marauder corner kick. Millerville had three corner kicks off the final push but could not seal a game-winner and ended in a 2-2 draw with East Stroudsburg.

Millersville has three remaining regular-season games to play to try to earn a playoff berth. Their next appearance on the field will be at Shippensburg, on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Both Zielke and Wainwright tally their fourth goal on the season.
  • East Stroudsburg had 12 shots to Millersville's seven.
  • The Marauders generate eight corner kicks to the Warrior's six.

THOUGHTS FROM HEAD COACH MATT PROCOPIO:
  • Thoughts on today's game: "Unfortunate start to the game with their goal. We collected ourselves and found a goal but thought we should have found more. Did well to start the half and then again the pk call is unfortunate. We had chances but didn't convert."
  • How the hard work and team effort played out today: "Worked hard. We made a good effort but we needed the results. Disappointing to drop points from a winning position again."
  • What needs to be done in these last three games: "We can only play one game at a time so it's just about the next game. I've already moved on to Shippensburg. Game by game approach."
  • What to expect against Shippensburg: "I expect nothing less than a typical psac east battle."
