GREENSBURG, Pa. — The Marauders snapped their three-game losing streak in emphatic fashion at Seton Hill Wednesday evening.
Jabria Ingram and
La'Shyra Williams led the way throughout, as Millersville used a dominant first-half performance to topple the Griffins 67-56.
The Marauders started out hot, grabbing an 11-3 lead in the first four minutes. This was driven mainly by Williams and Ingram. Williams netted seven of that first 11 and Ingram recorded assists on five of the Marauders' first seven baskets. Ingram would go on to set a season-high in assists in the first half, recording her eighth on a feed to
Morgan Mahoney. The visitors finished the quarter with a 21-14 lead partly because of the defense, which held Seton Hill to just three made field goals on 19 attempts in the period.
Millersville's dominance continued into the second, as the team started the period on an 13-1 run to push the advantage to 19. It was an example of what they want to do well-attacking the paint and forcing poor shots on the defensive end. The Marauders entered the break with a 22 to six lead in points in the paint and a 16 to six advantage in points off turnovers. That mark was despite having one more turnover than the hosts. Overall, they held the Griffins to just 13.8% shooting from the floor and 6.3% from beyond the arc, creating a halftime advantage of 17 points.
Sophie Elstone gave the Marauders their largest lead of the contest at 43-23 a few minutes after the break with a corner three-pointer. However, their self-inflicted mistakes started to show on the scoreboard, as six turnovers in the first five minutes of the third quarter quickly cut that advantage in half.
Millersville settled down in the final five minutes of the quarter and entered the fourth up 53-45. Ingram kept the offense afloat, creating two separate three-point opportunities in the span of four minutes. The Marauders' season-long leading scorer
Makiah Shaw made her mark on the defensive end by drawing a charge to stop a Griffin offensive run.
Down the stretch, Millersville turned to Williams to bring home the win. She netted six of the team's last 10 points and finished with a team-high 19.
Brenna Ortwein iced the game with a dagger three from the right wing to put the visitors up 10 with two minutes remaining.
