MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Millersville volleyball team got its first in-conference win of the season over Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) rival Kutztown, winning 3–0.
The first set went back and forth to start, starting out 5–5, but Kutztown was able to use a 7–2 run to give the Bears a 12–7 lead. The Marauders battled to close the gap and were able to after a 5–0 made the score 17–17 and forced the Bears to use a timeout. After that, Millersville kept its momentum to go on an 8–3 run to close out the set.
After a similar start to the first set in the second, it was all Marauders shortly after. The teams traded points to start the set at a 6–6 tie, but the Marauders steamrolled the Bears to a 22–11 lead.
Alex Nava had five kills during the run, scoring four of them in the Marauders first rallies of the run. The Bears got a couple points back at the end of the set, but a kill from
Caroline Halsey clinched the set 25–13 and put the Marauders up 2–0.
The Marauders kept their hot streak going into the start of the third set, jumping out to a 6–1 lead, with three points coming from three kills from
Emma Kerwin. However, the Bears surged back to tie the game at 8–8, although the stalemate wouldn't last long. Millersville quickly regained its lead, going up 16–10 after a pair of kills from
Sam White. Kutztown battled back to make it close but were unable to tie or take the lead from that point on, as Kerwin got some key kills down the stretch, and the Marauders completed the 3–0 sweep.
The Marauders have some time off before their next game at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 6 at Lock Haven for another PSAC match.
POSTGAME THOUGHTS FROM EMMA LUDWIG
On bouncing back from yesterday's loss: "After the loss against East Stroudsburg, we still felt it was a very competitive loss and our team played very well. We played together, so I think we kind of brought that same energy that we had last night into this game against Kutztown and really took it to them."
On looking ahead to Lock Haven: "I think we're looking forward to another road game. Traveling with each other is very fun and we have a lot of good memories when we get to do that. Hopefully against Lock Haven we can get another good win like we did today and we can keep our PSAC standing spot moving up in the right direction."
