Millersville men's soccer ties with Bloomsburg

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Marauders' face off against Bloomsburg Saturday night ended in a 1-1 draw due to a late goal by Huskies' forward Sammy Ames in the 74th minute of play. This is just the sixth time these two teams have played to a tie and the first since November 2002.

Though the Marauders (5-1-3, 2-1-2 PSAC East) did not come out on top, they had control of possession from the first whistle. Millersville started strong, quickly moving their way up the field with sharp passes, as well as hustle and physicality, leading to an early goal by Richy Valverde in the sixth minute of play. Bob Hennessey gained possession in the middle of the field, finding Michael Dempsey on the wing, who then placed a cross into the box that found the foot of Valverde.

Millersville maintained its lead through the first half and a majority the secon, until a defensive miscue resulted in an open shot for Ames. The Marauders had two more offensive attacks following the goal but shots by Bob Hennessey and Dempsey were not able to get by goalkeeper Brady Rimple.

POST GAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON:

  • Overall thoughts on tonight's performance: "It was a very up and down game tonight. We started great and did exactly what we had talked about and scored a great goal. Then we got away from our plans and allowed Bloomsburg to take the initiative too much. We didn't have enough control of the game and eventually that caught up with us for the tying goal."
  • On plans for next week's game: "It was a better performance than on Wednesday but there are still some things we need to improve upon so we will be looking to find those solutions midweek against Mercy."

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Travis Holiday collected two saves in the draw.
  • There were just 16 shots taken throughout the match. Each team had eight shots, just three going on target for the Marauders and two for the Huskies.
  • Four yellow cards were distributed. Jake Altimore and Bloomsburg midfielder Sam Blumberger each received one in the first half. Hennessey and Ames had theirs in the second half.
UP NEXT
  • The Marauders have a short break before traveling to Mercy for an out of conference match-up on Oct. 4 at 3 p.m.
