Late goals by Marauder seniors lead to season opener win over Ashland

ASHLAND, Ohio - The Millersville men's soccer team opened the 2023 season with a 3-2 win over the Ashland Eagles. Redshirt Senior Bob Hennessey led the way for the Marauders scoring two goals and senior Mike Kreider had an impact on both sides of the pitch with a goal late in the second half.

Hennessey's goal off a long cross from Zander Leik in the 54th minute started a wild second half that saw the teams combine for five tallies. Ashland scored twice in a seven-minute span to take a 2-1 lead with just over 10 minutes to play. Kreider scored the equalizer in the 82nd minute, and fewer than six minutes later (87'), Connor Fiadino found Hennessey for the game-winner.

This win brings head coach Steve Widdowson to 11-3-2 all-time in season openers.

POSTGAME REACTION FROM STEVE WIDDOWSON

  • Overall thoughts from today's match: "I think we had a lot of things we struggled with today but overall we showed tremendous resiliency and character to grind out a result. The goals we scored were very good and we grew into the game over time, but there are plenty of things to clean up, which is to be expected in the first game.
  • "The play from Bob Hennessey: "Henno was fantastic today. As ever, he brought great energy and work-rate but today he showed a great touch around the box. He played fantastic throughout and took his goals well while providing a constant threat."
  • Focuses before Wednesday's match against Holy Family: "The most important thing is to follow up with another result. However, we have to show more consistency and be more efficient in all areas of the game. Today was a good start. On Wednesday we have to ensure another positive step forward."
