WILMINGTON, Del. - Millersville women's soccer received a second half goal from Aalivia Wainwright to secure a 2-2 tie in Saturday's season opener at Goldey-Beacom.
Isabel Coy gave Millersville a 1-0 lead in the 30th, scoring off a flying effort from teammate Taylor Whitmer. Goldey-Beacom answered in the 42nd minute with a goal from Mariah McQueen, sending the game tied at 1-1 into the half. Goldey-Beacom then took the lead in the 53rd minute on a tally from Lexy Yeager, but Wainright scored three minutes later on an assist Maddie Zielke. Zielke delivered a through ball to Wainwright, who placed the ball in the back post.
"I'm happy that they showed resilience in coming back and battling till the end," said Millersville head coach Matt Procopio. "We will need that down the road."
The Marauders dominated the game statistically, outshooting their opponent, 18-6. Coy led the offense with one goal on six shots. Wainwright added two shots and a goal, and Kylie Sullivan totaled four shots.
"We executed our game plan well, just did not execute on more of our chances," Procopio said. "It's the first game so we will need to improve on that."
The Marauders start the season 0-0-1 and travel to Kutztown to face-off the Golden Bears at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 6 in Kutztown, Pa.
