MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – It was an intense battle between the Wilmington Wildcats and Millersville Marauders under the lights of Pucillo Field, and it was just last season that the Wildcats handed Millersville its first loss of the season. On Tuesday night, however, Millersville extended its unbeaten start to 5-0-1 with a 2-0 win.
Zander Leik scored both of the Marauders' goals.
The Marauders' offense knocked on the door from the start of the game, though it was not until the 37th minute of play that
Roy Parkyn placed a ball just over the Wildcat defense, finding the foot of Leik, who then finished the play with a shot into the far right side of the net. This was the Marauders ninth shot on net during the first half.
That was not all for the Marauder offense. With three minutes remaining in the first half,
Josh Rodriguez and Parkyn fought for possession against a charging Wildcat offense. Rodriguez cleared the ball, sending Leik one-on-one with the goalkeeper once again. Leik took a long shot from a few yards outside the 18 that dribbled just past the hands of the Wilmington goalkeeper. This gave the Marauders a 2-0 lead going into the second half.
,
The Marauders did not slow down their offensive approach in the second half, taking nine more shots on net. Leik was just short of the hat trick with a tremendous shot that deflected just off the inside of the cross bar. Millersville secured the victory, maintaining possession for the remaining minutes.
POSTGAME REACTIONS FROM HEAD COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON
- On the team's energy tonight: "The team was great again today against a very good and dangerous team. We have been able to maintain our intensities throughout every game but that just speaks to our depth and fitness levels. Tonight was a very intense game but it also made it a really good game."
- The offense from Leik and other players coming off the bench: "Zander gave us a great lift off the bench as did several players.
