Nowak, Warriors top Marauders in game one of the series

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - East Stroudsburg's Chase Nowak tossed a complete-game shutout in leading No. 9 Warriors to a 2-0 win over the No. 8 Millersville Marauders Friday afternoon.

It was the first match-up of two PSAC teams ranked in the top 10 since 2015, and Nowak, who pitched a season-high in innings, limited the Marauders to just four hits and six total baserunners, striking out nine while tossing 118 pitches. He out-dueled Millersville's Carson Kulina, who gave up just two unearned runs in six innings. Kulina allowed two runs for the first time in his nine appearances. His three walks issued were a season high.

"Nowak was good," said Millersville head coach Jon Shehan. "He was getting a ball or two off the plate, and he took advantage of it. We weren't committed at the plate at times, and we were either late or chased a few pitches here and there."

East Stroudsburg scored both of its runs on one swing of the bat by Tim Haverstick in the bottom of the fourth, but his single was set up by a two-out, infield single from Parker Frey, followed by a Millersville error and a full-count walk to Jeremy Piatkiewicz. Haverstick slapped an 0-1 pitch into the outfield, bringing home the only runs the Warriors would need.

Millersville threatened in the fifth, with Cole Houser and Tyler Wright reaching scoring position. With two outs, Chase Simmons hit a line drive directly to the third baseman, Victor Cruz, ending the inning. Thomas Caufield hit a one-out double to left-center field in the top of the ninth, but Nowak navigated the Marauders No. 4 and No. 5 hitters to close out the win.

"It's just PSAC baseball," said Shehan. The team that has less free 90's usually wins. We had a few more than (East Stroudsburg) today, and it cost us the game. No one is going undefeated in conference. Tomorrow, we have two really good arms going at The Coop. I always like our chances."

Caufield's double was Millersville's only extra-base hit. Houser was the lone Marauder to reach base twice, recording a single and a walk.

The loss snapped Millersville's winning streak at 10 games while East Stroudsburg won its ninth in a row. Both teams are now 9-1 in PSAC East play.
