MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Two-out hitting and a stellar outing from the pitching staff earned Millersville a 5-0 win in game one of Saturday's doubleheader between the No. 8 Marauders and No. 9 East Stroudsburg, briefly evening the series. East Stroudsburg, however, took the rubber match 9-1, handing the Marauders their first home loss of 2023.
East Stroudsburg (28-5, 10-2 PSAC East) earned its first regular season series win over the Marauders since 2010 and did so by piling up 17 hits--the most against the Marauders this season--and by striking out 11. It was the first team to strike out double-digit Marauders at Cooper Park this season.
Millersville (26-6) and East Stroudsburg are now even in the PSAC East standings, both at 10-2.
GAME ONE
• Four of Millersville's five runs--including all three in the fourth--were scored with two outs, and the Marauders jumped on Brent Francisco (7-2) early with
Jimmy Losh starting the bottom of the first with a double, and
Thomas Caufield driving him in with a double one batter later. Millersville built its lead to 2-0 in the third inning with some two-out magic. Francisco retired the first two Marauders, but
Bren Taylor singled and stole second base to reach scoring position. After a Caufield walk.
Cole Houser laced a single to right, scoring Taylor, who slid in at home just before the relay reached catcher Tim Haverstick.
• In the fourth,
Tyler Wright's two-out single was followed by a
Chase Simmons triple to right-center, and an error allowed Simmons to score and extended the inning for a Taylor RBI single.
• Millersville starter
Ben Wilchacky (6-1) pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings. He retired the first two batters of the fifth and after a walk to Mike Kelly, the Marauders went to the bullpen for a lefty-lefty match-up.
Evan Rishell ended the inning for Millersville and went on to toss 2 1/3 shutout innings, allowing just one hit.
• Taylor and Wright both had two hits for the Marauders. Taylor also recorded two of Millersville's four stolen bases. East Stroudsburg entered the game as the nation's leader in stolen bases but they came up empty while both Wilchacky and Rishell picked runners off of first base.
GAME TWO
• While Millersville started quickly in game one, East Stroudsburg road a fast start to the game two victory. It took just four pitches for the Warriors to load the bases against starter
Alex Mykut, who was the victim of bad luck in the form of infield dribblers and bloops that consistently dropped in for base hits. Mykut hit the first batter of the game, and Kelly followed by looping a single to left. A bunt from Cam Hubbard found its way into an empty space to load the bases. A walk and a fielder's choice gave East Stroudsburg a 2-0 lead after one inning.
• Millersville had its opportunities to reverse fortunes early in the game but stranded six runners in the first four innings. The Marauders' closed the gap to 4-1 in the fourth on a Wright RBI single but Nate McAuliffe (4-1) entered in relief and locked down the Marauders of the next 4 2/3 innings, allowing just one hit while striking out six of the 14 batters he faced. Millersville went without a base runner from the fifth into the ninth.
• Taylor went 2-for-3 and drew a walk for the Marauders. Six Warriors tallied two or more hits. Kelly led the way with three.
