SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – The Millersville women's lacrosse team capitalized on their final road game of the season, defeating Shepherd 18-12 on Wednesday afternoon. Multiple Marauders contributed to the PSAC East victory including Ashlyn Simonetti who recorded her new career-high of six goals scored. Hayden Corcoran tallied two goals and notched her third game this season with three assists, and Liv Genovese contributed four goals on the day. Genovese also recorded a new career-high of 11 draw controls for the Marauders.
"Today showcased our attacking unit and we didn't just rely on one or two players," said head coach Kaitlyn Hafdell. "We were able to utilize all seven players to create a winning outcome."
The Marauder's offense in the second quarter was the difference maker, as they outscored the Rams 9-3. Defensively, Millersville limited Shepherd to taking 23 shots on goal, with a game-high of eight in the first quarter. Millersville dominated the Rams statistically as they held the edge in shots (40-33), shots on goal (35-23), ground balls (21-19), draw controls (21-12), and free position shots (7-4).
Scoring two goals and dishing out one assist was Rachel Keeney. Mary Moraca tallied two goals on the day while Ella Linthicum and Charlotte Lasak scored one each.
Millersville improves to 9-7 overall and 6-5 in the PSAC East while Shepherd drops to 5-12 overall and 1-11 in conference action. Despite the PSAC East win, Millersville missed their chance at postseason play as the three teams from the Eastern division have clinched their spots in the PSAC tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Shepherd held a one goal advantage over Millersville in the first quarter of action. With the score tied 2-2 with 9:11 remaining, Linthicum scored to give the Marauders a 3-2 edge over Shepherd. The Rams rallied for two unanswered goals to tie and take a 4-3 lead over to enter the second quarter. The Marauders and Shepherd both took 11 shots each, with 10 of Millersville's landing on goal compared to eight for Shepherd.
- An effective second quarter for the Marauders gave them a five-goal lead at the half. Millersville fired off a game-high of 12 shots on goal and grabbed 10 draw controls. The Marauders generated a 5-0 run before the Rams scored their first goal of the quarter with 5:57 on the clock. After Shepherd reached within two goals of Millersville with 1:03 till half, the Marauders' offense stretched their lead by scoring three additional goals to lead 12-7 at halftime.
- Millersville maintained their lead by outscoring Shepherd 5-3 in the third quarter. The Marauders tallied goals from Moraca, Keeney, Genovese, and Simonetti who netted two for Millersville. The Rams closed the third quarter by scoring with 0:13 remaining, but still trailed the Marauders by seven headed into the final quarter of regulation.
- The fourth quarter was low scoring for both teams, as Shepherd tallied two goals compared to one for Millersville. Genovese capitalized on a free position shot to extend the Marauder's lead 18-12. The Rams scored their final goal with 1:05 remaining, but the deficit was too far to comeback as Millersville picked up the PSAC East victory.

- Simonetti fired off a team-high of 11 shots, 10 of which landed on goal.
- Corcoran's team-high of three assists and two goals recorded five points on the day.
- The Marauders goalkeeper, Morgan Scott, recorded 10 saves with a game-high of four in the first quarter.
- Lara Kruck entered in goal during the PSAC East match-up and notched her first save of her career.
- Millersville went 4-for-7 in free position shots with Genovese leading the Marauders as she capitalized on 2-of-3.
- Millersville's defense forced the Rams to 16 turnovers, seven of which were in the first quarter.
