MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – In her first at-bat under the lights at Seaber Softball Stadium,
Lacey O'Donnell delivered. The graduate student slapped a walk-off, RBI single down the left field line with the bases loaded to give Millersville an 8-7 victory over Shepherd in game two of Tuesday's doubleheader.
Â
Millersville entered the bottom half of the sixth down two and needing a rally, which they were able to put together. The rally started with O'Donnell reaching on an infield single and
Aleese Angelo recording her 23rd double of the season, which tied the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) single-season doubles record.
Gabby D'Ottavio followed with a sacrifice fly that scored O'Donnell and
Gabi Turner evened score up by reaching on an error that allowed Angelo to cross home.
Â
In the seventh,
Taylor Campagna drew a lead-off walk and was replaced by
Bryn Spoerl on the bases which proved to be a great move by head coach
Jen Probst. On the following play,
Victoria Fuss grounded into a fielder's choice and Spoerl beat out the throw to second base to keep the 'Ville momentum alive.
Sam Fried then singled to load the bases before O'Donnell provided fireworks.
Â
Morgan Crutcher pitched a solid seventh inning that included a pair of groundouts to set up the walk-off. Crutcher pitched a complete game, forced nine groundouts and struck out one batter while allowing four earned runs. The win improved her record to 6-11 this season. Â
Â
"It's great to get back in the win column," said head coach
Jen Probst. "The lineup was hitting one through nine today. We're hoping to finish the season with this king of fight."
Â
In game one, Millersville held a 4-3 lead after three innings of action. Turner hit a no-doubter to left field in the second inning before 'Ville added three additional runs in the third. Those runs were produced off RBI singles from
Kendra Bumgardner, O'Donnell and Turner. However, Shepherd took the lead after a three-run fourth inning and wouldn't give it back. Angelo hit an RBI double in the fourth and Turner recorded her third RBI of the game in the seventh, but 'Ville wasn't able to mount the comeback it needed.
Alex Schaefer received the loss in game two despite only giving up five earned runs. The junior struck out five batters in six innings as well – she moved to 15-13 this season.
Â
Millersville now has two doubleheaders remaining this season. They'll welcome Kutztown on Thursday before traveling to Bloomsburg on Saturday.
