Angelo breaks PSAC single-season doubles record; Millersville splits with Kutztown

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Aleese Angelo continued her record-breaking season on Tuesday afternoon by breaking the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) single-season doubles record and the Millersville single-season RBI record, which was held by current assistant coach Rebecca Blatt. Angelo has recorded 26 doubles and 54 RBI's this season. The junior broke both records during the Marauders' 7-1 victory over Kutztown to start the day and added a double during the Golden Bears' 1-0 victory in game two.

The PSAC doubles record has been in place since 1995 when Bloomsburg's Brenda Moffat recorded 23 doubles. Since then, Kutztown's Ashley Fitzgerald (2008) and West Chester's Samantha Ingersoll (2009) have tied it, but Angelo was the first to pass the 23 mark in 28 years. Blatt's RBI record of 52 was set in 2018.

In addition to the records, Angelo currently leads the nation in doubles and is six away from the NCAA Division II all-time single season record of 32.

Millersville's game-one victory featured strong at-bats from the top of the lineup and a stellar six-inning performance from Morgan Crutcher. The Marauders' top-four batters went 10-for-15 while adding five runs and five RBI's, four coming off Angelo's bat. Gabby D'Ottavio got 'Ville on the board with a first-inning, RBI single following Angelo's PSAC record-breaking double, but the lineup did most of its damage in the second.

With two outs in the second, 'Ville went on one of its patented two-out rallies as Tori Fuss drew a walk in the nine spot which allowed the top of the order to come up. Sam Fried and Lacey O'Donnell singled to load the bases which paved way for Angelo's record-breaking, three-RBI double to put 'Ville up 4-0.

The Marauders would tack on a pair of runs in the fifth courtesy of an Angelo solo-shot to right field and a Marli Schreiner RBI double to deep center field. O'Donnell scored 'Ville's seventh run in the sixth inning off a KU wild pitch.

Crutcher only allowed one run in the victory and struck out three Kutztown batters. The junior worked her way out of a bases-loaded jam in the second inning, gave up one run in the third and allowed just two hits the rest of the way. Alex Schaefer entered in the seventh to close out the win for 'Ville. Crutcher improved to 7-11 this season.

Game two was a defensive battle that came down to a Kutztown solo home run in seventh. Up to that point, neither pitcher had given up a run. Schaefer pitched all seven innings for the Marauders while striking out six batters and walking just two. She fell to 15-14 this season.

"Pitchers did well against a great hitting team and our defense came up big with runners on," said head coach Jen Probst. "Aleese had another great day and I'm looking forward to see what she can accomplish next season."

The Marauders will head to Bloomsburg on Saturday, April 29 for their final doubleheader of the season.
