Millersville softball splits on third day in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Millersville softball team went 1-1 today in Clermont, Fla. at The Spring Games, beating Bemidji State 4-2 in the early game before falling to St. Cloud State 8-4 in the later game. The Marauders now sit at 10-4 on the season with four games remaining on their spring break schedule.

Alex Schaefer threw her second-consecutive complete-game and third this season in the Marauders' victory over Bemidji State. The junior allowed six hits, two runs, two walks and struck out eight batters -- she now holds a 1.12 earned-run average this season.

VS. BEMIDJI STATE
  • Bemidji State opened the scoring in the first, scoring its only two runs of the game on a two RBI single.
  • Aleese Angelo cut into the Bemidji lead in the bottom of the first, hitting a sacrifice fly that drove in lead-off hitter, Lacey O'Donnell.
  • The remaining three 'Ville runs came in the second inning and started with a game-tying, solo-shot from Alyssa Stover. O'Donnell singled after the Stover homerun and sent in Victoria Fuss to give the Marauders a 3-2 lead. Sam Fried then doubled to score O'Donnell, putting the Marauders up 4-2.
  • Schaefer held Bemidji State to three hits in the final five innings of play, resulting in the Marauder win.
VS. ST. CLOUD STATE
  • Millersville recorded 10 hits against St. Cloud State and held the Huskies to seven, but a big fourth inning from St. Cloud and eight Marauder errors proved to be the difference.
  • Millersville scored three of its four runs in the third inning as Gabby D'Ottavio drove in both Fried and Kendra Bumgardner on a double that started game's scoring.
  • Gabi Turner then hit a sacrifice fly to right field that sent Aleese Angelo home, putting 'Ville up 3-0.
  • The Huskies would take control in the fourth, scoring six runs off of three hits and four Millersville errors. St. Cloud would go on to score a run in the fifth and sixth, bringing its total to eight.
  • The Marauders comeback attempt fell short in the seventh, managing to score one run on a Turner single.
  • Morgan Crutcher took the loss in game two despite leaving the game with zero earned runs. She gave up four hits, struck out three batters while holding the Huskies to no walks.
  • Bumgardner threw one and two-thirds innings, striking out three batters and walking two.
  • Angelina Saverase gave up one run in the seventh inning and struck out a batter.
