Marauders split on day one in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Millersville softball team started its spring break trip in Clermont, Fla. with an eight-inning victory over Glenville State, defeating the Pioneers 3-2. Alex Schaefer recorded her fourth win of the season and Aleese Angelo provided the late heroics for 'Ville, sending Kendra Bumgardner home on a RBI single in the top of the eighth that proved to be the game-winning run.

The Marauders (7-3) followed the win with a 2-1 loss to West Virginia Wesleyan in a game that saw 'Ville struggle to get its offense going. Sami Fried recorded the Marauders' only hit in the second inning and was left stranded at first. Millersville did manage to draw six walks and scored its lone run in the sixth inning on an Alyssa Stover RBI walk when the bases were loaded, but weren't able to come up with a game-changing play.

VS. GLENVILLE STATE
  • Angelo started the scoring in the third inning following a two-out double that drove in both O'Donnell and Victoria Fuss.
  • Glennville State evened the score at two in the fourth courtesy of a lead-off triple followed by a single and a double.
  • Fried led off in the eighth and pushed Bumgardner to third with a sacrifice bunt before Angelo provided the winning RBI.
  • Morgan Crutcher drew the start and threw three innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs while striking out three batters.
  • Schaefer (4-1) relived Crutcher in the fourth inning and threw five scoreless innings, giving up just two hits and striking out five Pioneers.
  • Angelo finished with all three RBI's for the Marauders in the win, going 2-for-4 in the clean up spot.
  • Lacey O'Donnell continued to impress at the plate, going 3-for-3 at the plate, walking once and scoring a run.
VS. WEST VIRGINIA WESLEYAN
  • West Virginia Wesleyan hit three first-inning singles and jumped out to a 1-0 lead that it would hold until building it to two in the fourth.
  • The Marauders only run and best chance at a comeback came in the bottom of the sixth as they walked four times, scored on a bases-loaded walk but couldn't drive in any additional runs.
  • Millersville utilized four pitchers in the loss. Crutcher started and pitched two innings, giving up four hits and one run. Bumgardner entered in relief and threw two hitless innings while giving up an unearned run. Schaefer threw a pair of innings as well and struck out three batters while only allowing one hit. Angelina Savarase recorded one inning in the circle and allowed one hit.
