Tough battle against Shippensburg snaps Millersville’s streak on the road

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Millersville women's basketball team fought till the very end, but the Raiders snapped the Marauders win streak with a score of 64-57. A tight match-up kept the game within single digits, with the largest lead of the night coming from Shippensburg in the third with a nine point gap. Millersville was within two points early in the fourth quarter, but Marauder fouls placed the Raiders on the free throw line and Shippensburg capitalized to place the game out of reach for Millersville on Wednesday night. 

Millersville drops to 16-10 overall and 11-9 in PSAC play and Shippensburg improves to 20-5 and 15-4 in conference action. The Marauders have two regular season games remaining before postseason action begins.  

Leading the box was Taylor Langan who tallied nine points while also grabbing six rebounds, three steals, three blocks, and two assists. Morgan Mahoney was effective off the bench with eight points, going 2-for-2 behind the arc. Bria Beverly led Millersville in rebounds with eight, seven of which were on the defensive.  

HOW IT HAPPENED    

  • The Marauders were on the board first from a Brenna Ortwein three-pointer from the corner, Millersville went on a 5-0 run before Shippensburg landed their first points of the night. The Raiders defense settled in as they drew nine Millersville fouls in the first. Ariel Jones drained back-to-back three-pointers for the Raiders to give Shippensburg a 12-9 lead. A three-pointer by Jaida Parker placed the Marauders within one point at the end of the first.
  • Makiah Shaw's effort to grab an offensive rebound allowed Jabria Ingram to find the basket as she evened the score 20-20 in the second. The Raiders three-point shooting helped Shippensburg to regain their lead. Mahoney entered the game and drained a jumper tie the score 28-28. With 0:37 second until the half, Mahoney came up big again with a three-pointer to give Millersville a 31-30 lead at the half.  
  • The Raiders opened the third quarter with a 9-0 run to lead the Marauders by eight points. Shippensburg reached their furthest lead of the night with a nine-point gap, but Millersville's offensive efforts put the Marauders back within short distance. Langan hit a fade away jumper to put the Marauders within one point with 2:31 remaining. The Raiders drained a shot from behind the arc to maintain their small lead, but two Marauder layups tied the game 46-46 to enter the fourth quarter.
  • Shippensburg quickly regained their lead to start the final quarter of action. Mahoney hit her second three-pointer of the night to put Millersville within three-points with 6:44 remaining. The Marauders fought till the end but Shippensburg free throws down the stretch extended the Raiders lead. Millersville was in possession with a minute remaining and Parker capitalized on a driving layup to cut the Marauders' deficit to four. Shippensburg made three additional free throws before the final buzzer to claim the victory over Millersville by seven points.  

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE   

  • Millersville saw their best shooting in the first quarter, shooting 46.15% from the floor, and draining two from behind the arc.
  • Shippensburg was held to shooting 35% from the floor and going 1-for-4 behind the arc in the third quarter.
  • The Marauders held the edge in points off turnovers (18-17), bench points (25-15), and points in the paint (38-28).
  • Millersville grabbed 34 rebounds on the night, 26 of which were defensive.  

UP NEXT  

  • Millersville will travel to West Chester for their last road game of the regular season on Wednesday, Feb. 22. The Marauders will face off with the Golden Rams for a 5:30 tip-off time.
