Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Wes Champlin, Athletic Communications Graduate Assistant

Two Marauders set season highs but Women’s Basketball falls at Edinboro

EDINBORO, Pa. —  Looking to move above .500 in conference play, Millersville traveled to Edinboro to take on the Fighting Scots. The Marauders received season-best scoring efforts from Madison Grubb and Brenna Ortwein, but it wasn't enough as the hosts claimed a 77-66 victory.

Sophie Elstone led off the game with a three-pointer, putting the Marauders in front just 13 seconds in. However, that advantage would be short lived as the Scots would take the lead a minute later and hold it for the rest of the half. Despite Edinboro shooting a better percentage, Millersville kept pace due in part to its dominance on the glass. The visitors held a 20 to 13 advantage in rebounding including a seven to two mark on the offensive end.

Makiah Shaw and Grubb were crucial to that effort, as both pulled down four total rebounds with two on the offensive end. Grubb, a redshirt junior, provided a spark off the bench in her seven first half minutes. Her seven points and four rebounds were both season highs. She would improve on those marks in the second half, finishing with 13 points, two steals, and a team-high six rebounds.

Marin Miller gave the Marauders the 35-34 lead with a pull-up jumper 55 seconds into the third quarter, their first in nearly 20 game minutes. They would extend that lead to seven a few minutes later due in part to two great passes from Juliana Vinlaun. The first was a bounce pass finding a rolling Shaw for the easy lay-in. On the next possession, Vinlaun rewarded La'Shyra Williams for running the floor with a halfcourt dime to put the Marauders up 47-40.

The Scots cut into that lead before entering the final period with a 55-54 edge. It grew to four points by the midpoint of the quarter and the teams traded baskets down the stretch. Edinboro then took advantage of an untimely Marauder lull in scoring and put the game out of reach in the final two minutes.

GAME NOTES
  • The loss breaks the tie in the all-time series between these two programs, as they were previously knotted at 11 wins apiece.
  • Kira Mowen went with a deeper rotation in this game, as 11 Marauders saw the floor. 10 of those 11 played more than five minutes and only one player topped 30 minutes (Ortwein).
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • After starting the season zero of six from beyond the arc, Sophie Elstone has quickly found her shooting stroke. She's gone three of five from deep in consecutive games, pushing her season mark to 37.5 percent.
  • Turnovers continue to plague the Marauders, as they finished with seven more than the Scots. That marks the eighth time in nine games this season.
  • Grubb matched career-highs with 13 points and two steals while setting a new career-high in rebounds with six.
POSTGAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH KIRA MOWEN
  • Overall thoughts: "It's about closing and I have to figure out a way to get us across that hump, especially in the 4th quarter. That's not on the team, it's on me and I've got to put them in better positions to be successful."
  • On what did and didn't go well: "Offensively, we got great looks and we continued to push. We still need to be a little more cognizant of turnovers and do our best controlling the tempo. Defensively, at first we did what we needed to do and our team continued to fight."
UP NEXT
  • The Marauders will play the second half of this PSAC back-to-back tomorrow in Erie. They take on the Mercyhurst Lakers at 1 p.m.
