RICHMOND, Va.- Millersville women's basketball captured its first victory of the season in overtime against the Shaw Bears by a score of 74-68. After a first half in which they gave up 40 points, the Marauders allotted the Bears just 28 in the final 25 minutes. Head Coach
Kira Mowen said that that was something that was emphasized at halftime.Â
"We talked at half about cleaning some things up and I applaud them. They (the team) took it to heart and all made changes."
The Marauders shot well in the first half despite the defensive struggles, putting up 33 points. They were led in scoring by
Jabria Ingram and
Jillian Crawford, who both came off of the bench. Ingram had seven on three shots while Crawford led the team with eight on four shots. A major contributor to Millersville's deficit was the turnover differential, as the Marauders committed 12 giveaways compared to the Bears' four.Â
In the second half and overtime, it was the teams' execution and composure down the stretch that made the difference in the game. Mowen liked what she saw from her team.Â
"We had composure down the stretch and pulled out a great win on the road. When you get wins on the road it always feels good. Our execution of both offensive and defensive principles was paramount in the victory."
Millersville held Shaw to just 28% shooting from the field after the break compared to 45% before. Crawford again led the 'Ville in scoring with ten points while
Morgan Mahoney was the team's go-to scorer in overtime. She went 3/3 in the extra period, scoring six of the team's 10 points and out-pacing the Bears who netted just four.Â
The Marauders' next test comes when they travel to face Daemen University on Nov. 18 at 12 p.m.
