MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Millersville football's season came to an end Saturday with a 30-10 loss to Seton Hill at Biemesderfer Stadium.
After opening the season 3-1, the Marauders dropped their seventh consecutive game Saturday, and the same issues that plagued them throughout the skid cropped up against the Griffins. Millersville's quarterbacks
Ryan Zeltt and and Robert Footman Jr. combined to throw three interceptions and were sacked a combined seven times. Playing with a patchwork offensive line, the center-quarterback exchanged was an issue all game with the Marauders putting the ball on the ground six times, and the one fumble lost was returned for a touchdown, making it a three-score game in the third quarter.
Millersville turnovers led directly to 23 of Seton Hill's 30 points.
"We had some opportunities and took ourselves out of it," said Millersville head coach
J.C. Morgan. "The difference today was that we didn't give ourselves to make plays because of the mistakes. The mistakes did not give us a chance to win the game. That's the most frustrating part of this afternoon.
Even with the miscues, the Marauders were in the game early in the third. A school record-tying 52-yard field goal at the halftime gun made it a 16-10 game. On Seton Hill's first drive on the third, quarterback Jake Cruz fumbled, and
Ryan Aument scooped it up at the Seton Hill 22. Footman connected with
Titus Kruah to the Seton Hill 9 on the first snap, and on second and goal, Footman scrambled into open space and raced into the end zone for what would have been the go-ahead score. But Footman was flagged for taunting before he crossed the goal line, and Millersville was pushed to the 17. Millersville settled for a 39-yard field goal attempt that missed wide left.
"It took points off the board," said Morgan. "They made mistakes, too. The ball bounced their way. We had a clear path on the fumble recovery and got tripped up. We dropped snaps, they return for a touchdown. They drop a snap it bounces right back to them. It was that kind of day. But the penalty on the touchdown, I try to look at things that it leads to a teachable moment we can grow and learn from. We will be better for it next time. It's unfortunate. It can be a moment that helps us moving forward."
After Zeltt threw two picks in the first half, Footman entered for the final drive of the second quarter, but Millersville's offense fared no better. Footman was sacked five times in the third quarter alone and Millersville managed 29 total yards of offense in the quarter, finishing with 248 yards of offense, which was still more than Seton Hill, which finished with 216 and five fewer first downs than the Marauders.
"We moved the ball to where we had chances in their territory, but then we'd have a sack, a bad snap that took the momentum away. That has been a theme of this year, not being able to get it done."
Millersville's lone touchdown came on a 56-yard run from
Jaquan Howard. He finished with 83 yards on 12 carries. McDowell's field goal tied a record set in 1974 by Barry Brunner.
Millersville's defense was led by
Garrett Cox's 14 tackles.
Hez Faison recorded a sack. Cox finished the season as the PSAC leader in tackles with 114 and also led the league with 16 1/2 tackles for loss.
MORE FROM COACH MORGAN
- "The difference was a lot smaller than many would think. I don't think people appreciate how hard it is to make up that difference. That's part of our process and our journey. I truly believe we have the right young men around that will lead to some motivation moving forward. I believe that there is championship football coming to this stadium...There is only one way to do it, and that's full steam ahead. There's a saying that the only way to get by is to go through, and we are going to go through."
