Volleyball falls in four sets to Shippensburg

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Millersville looked to make it back-to-back upsets over the weekend when it hosted Shippensburg Saturday afternoon. After dropping the first two sets, the Marauders bounced back and took the third before falling 3-1 to the Raiders.

Alex Nava took control of the Millersville offense early on, scoring three of the team's first five points via a kill.  Even with that, the Raiders quickly took control of the set with a 14-4 run.

The second set started out as a back-and-forth affair as the teams were tied five-all early on. Shippensburg scored the next five points, threatening to run away with the set as they had previously. However, this time the Marauders responded with an 8-2 run of their own featuring three kills from Emma Kerwin. The Raiders answered back with a six-point spurt and didn't let that lead slip away, eventually winning the set 25-18.

With their backs against the wall, the young Marauders put up their best performance of the day. The teams were on the see-saw early on, but the visitors eventually took a five-point lead at 14-9. That lead would hold until a few points later when the Raiders had an 18-14 advantage. Millersville came back with an 8-1 run to make the score 22-19. In that run were two consecutive kills from Nava, four Raider errors, and a vicious kill by Taylor Welter to give the hosts their first lead of the set (19-18).

Shippensburg pushed the game to overtime, where an excellently placed serve from Caroline Halsey sealed it in the Maruaders' favor (27-25).

The final set was much like the others in that it was close until each team had five points. At that point, the Raiders went on a 5-0 run to claim the lead. The visitors built on that edge throughout the rest of the set until they finally took it 25-16.

The Marauders are back in action on Nov. 1 when they travel to face Jefferson in their last non-conference match of the season.

COACH BRIAN SMITH'S THOUGHTS

  • On the team's performance compared to last night: "We had to fight through that match last night and then had to turn around the next day and play a team that's even better.  So, part of it was them just being a better team. But when we passed well and played well, we were hanging in there. It's just what's going to happen when you're younger and less experienced."
  • On the rest of the match: "We moved some players around. We asked (Emma) Kerwin to play right side for us this week mainly because we needed to get three pin hitters that were scoring. We also put Alex (Nava) outside and that worked pretty well for us. She almost hit over .400 it yesterday and hit over .200 today."
GAME NOTES
  • With the loss, the Marauders' all-time record against the Raiders falls to 11-32. It is their second loss to them this season after falling in four sets at Shippensburg on Oct. 14.
  • The loss drops Millersville's conference record to 3-7 and dims their playoff hopes. They remain in sixth in the PSAC East.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Alex Nava finished the match with 16 kills, enough for the team lead. That matches her career high for the third time this season and makes it two consecutive matches with that number.
  • Taylor Welter started the third and fourth sets after coming off the bench in the previous two.
