Marauders make statement with dominating win over West Chester

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - With just a few games remaining in the regular season, a PSAC East title is on the line for the Millersville men's soccer team, and the Marauders took an edge in a tight race with West Chester and Bloomsburg with a dominating 3-0 victory over the Golden Rams Wednesday afternoon.

The win--Millersville's fifth in a row--moved the Marauders into first place in the division and one step closer to claiming the division title, now boasting a division record of 7-1-2.

All season Millersville has deployed a variety of goal scorers and play makers, making it extremely difficult for opponents to defend and maintain. From the first whistle Wednesday, Millersville's offense controlled play and secured an early lead in the 20th minute of play. Bob Hennessey fired a shot on net, which was deflected and followed up by Roy Parkyn, who made the finish. Millersville went into halftime leading 1-0.

Midway through the second half, Hennessey gained possession in the backfield and sent a long ball down the sideline leading Zander Leik in a foot race with the West Chester defense. Leik quickly settled and placed a shot just over the reach of goalkeeper Daniel Good, extending the Marauder lead to 2-0. Minutes later, Cody Scully found Hennessey making a run up the near sideline. Hennessey beat the defender with physicality and finesse, and placed a low cross into the box finding the foot of Michael Dempsey

POSTGAME REACTION FROM STEVE WIDDOWSON:

  • On the overall play vs. West Chester and preparation for Saturday's game vs. Bloomsburg: "The team was superb today and put in a really good performance. We have put in so much work over the last month and experienced some really tough results during that time. However, those experiences have prepared us and tested us for this run in. I couldn't be prouder of how we have grown and developed as a team culminating in today's effort. Now we must start the recovery process and stay grounded as we prepare for another really good team in Bloomsburg whom we play on Saturday."
