Marauders shutout against Kutztown

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — The Millersville field hockey team was stymied Wednesday night by the No. 3 Kutztown defense, falling 2–0. Millersville now stands at 9–7 overall and 3–5 against PSAC opponents.

The Marauders offense was held in check by the Golden Bears defense, as Millersville did not register a shot attempt or have a corner awarded. The Marauders defense did a good job limiting chances for Kutztown, but the Golden Bears were able to make the most of what they created.

The first goal for the Golden Bears came off a corner insert from Megan Doyle to Sarah Gatehouse, as Gatehouse received the pass and fired off the shot. The ball went off a Millersville defender through the net-front traffic to give Kutztown the lead late in the first half. The second goal was also off a penalty corner for Kutztown. The Golden Bears passed through the Marauders defense and Jillian Buchman had a tap-in goal after Sarah Gatehouse drew the defense and goalkeeper to her in front of the net.

The Marauders have one game remaining in their 2023 regular season, and a win will punch their ticket to the PSAC Tournament. Millersville hosts Mansfield at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28, and will recognize its seniors prior to the game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

POSTGAME REACTION FROM SHELLY BEHRENS
Overall thoughts: "Congrats to Kutztown. This is what I love about PSAC play, we just find a way to make each other better. Tonight, I thought we were a little soft defensively but I really love the first two quarters. I thought we came out flying, and I thought that was great. And then you know, we just shifted some personnel to try to give us an extra punch here and there, and again we just couldn't get one in. I think not getting any corners hurts us. We gave up two goals off the corners, we have to be better. But again, what can we learn from this to take into our last game?"

On senior day and the postseason stakes against Mansfield: "Win and get in? Where's my rabbit foot? But, senior day is always senior day, I think every day is senior day. But honestly, if that's the scenario where we're in and we have a chance to make the tournament, then we're going to chase that down."
