Marauders’ playoff hopes dashed after penalty shootout loss to Mansfield

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — It was a hectic day for everyone involved with Millersville Field Hockey. Not only was it Senior Day, but the Marauders needed to defeat Mansfield in order to make the PSAC playoffs.

After being down for most of the match, a timely goal from Caitlin Wasserman evened the score at two with five minutes remaining in regulation. Neither team capitalized in either overtime and the Mounties emerged victorious in the penalty shootout, ending the Marauders' playoff hopes.

Millersville's Morgan Lennon was the first to strike, giving the Marauders a 1-0 advantage seven minutes into the second quarter with her fourth goal of the season.  She was assisted on it by Codi Bollinger, her fourth of the season. Just over four minutes after the stoppage, Mansfield grabbed its first lead with a goal. A suspenseful 20 minutes later and Millersville was presented with a golden opportunity to tie the game on a penalty corner. Bri Harsh took the ball and flung it out to Wasserman, who was just inside the top of the circle. She rifled it home for the team's biggest goal of the season.

A scoreless final five minutes of regulation meant overtime. Excellent goaltending on both sides threw a wrench into each team's ability to score in both overtime periods, however. After 80 minutes of play, the match went into a penalty shootout.

Mansfield went three of five in the shootout while Millersville could only muster two goals in five attempts. The Marauders had a chance to tie it with the last attempt but weren't able to find paydirt.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The goal for Lennon was her fourth of the season and Wasserman's goal was her fifth.
  • Bri Harsh finished the season tops on the team in assists with five including today's.
GAME NOTES
  • The loss drops Millersville's all-time record against Mansfield to 16-13. The Marauders had been 12-1 in their last 13 meetings prior to today.
  • The loss removes Millersville from playoff contention. Mansfield clinches a berth with their victory.

POSTGAME REACTION FROM SHELLY BEHRENS
On the match and the emotions afterward: "I have nothing but love and pride for this group. (…) I thought we had a number of chances to put the game away in overtime and we just couldn't find the back of the net. I have immense pride and love for our kids in this program, I truly do.  Once we sit back and look at it, I think we'll see some of the things that could have turned our way. Even so, I was proud of the way they exemplified the intangibles today."

On her five seniors: "I think their impact is immeasurable when you have quality people and quality hockey players. Kris (Kristin Strijdom), Q (Q Nogoduka), Wass (Caitlin Wasserman), Emma (Hoats) and Caro (Caroline Griffin), the quality of person they are and how they represent our program is immeasurable."
