SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Marauders hit the road for the fifth time in two weeks against a red-hot Raiders team. They dropped the first two sets before controlling a set three win. The young team was unable to continue their magic in the fourth set, resulting in a 3-1 loss.
The Marauders went down quickly in the first two sets of the match. It looked as if a sweep was in order, but Millersville showed life down 0-2. They started it off by going up 5-2, their first lead of the match to that point. The Raiders responded, eventually knotting the game at 10. From there, they went on a commanding 10-2 run to take a 20-12 lead. The scoring barrage featured kills from three different players including four from Emma Kerwin. Lead in hand, the two teams traded points until her seventh kill of the set gave the Marauders the 25-18 victory.
The Marauders now had momentum on their side and looked to tie the match back up. However, Shippensburg came out firing, scoring five of the sets' first six points. Millersville got back to within two later in the set, but that was as close as they'd get.
Millersville hopes to bounce back when they host West Chester on Oct. 18th.
COACH BRIAN SMITH'S THOUGHTS
- On the match: "We were excited to play today after a poor team performance last night. The warm-up looked fine, but right away we went out and made unforced errors. It was the exact same start, down 9-3 with most of those errors our own."
On what changed from set one to set three: "The honest answer to a better second set and then winning set three was that we pulled most of our defensive players and just let our hitters play all around. It wasn't some new strategy, it was just the passers playing poorly. As a team, we had 15 zero passes last night and today we started down the same trail."
GAME NOTES
- The loss drops the Marauders' all-time record against the Raiders to 11-31. They are 2-19 away from Millersville in the series.
- Millersville falls to 1-6 in PSAC East play with the loss and remains near the bottom of the standings. Shippensburg improves to 6-1 in conference matches and remains second. The Raiders have been playing well recently, evidenced by a 9-1 mark in their last 10 matches.
