MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Sparked by victories from back-ups
Eli Tuckey and
Braden Newby, Millersville scored its first win over Seton Hill since 2013 by a 23-14 final.
With two regulars out of the lineup, Tuckey stepped in at 157 pounds and Newby wrestled up a weight class at 184. Tuckey's hard-fought 7-4 decision helped turn the tide of the dual, and Newby's 12-4 major decision clinched the win for the Marauders (7-4, 3-2 PSAC), who have now won three PSAC duals in a season for the first time.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The dual started at 285 pounds, and Seton Hill built a 7-0 lead before Millersville won five consecutive matches. The fifth win was an emphatic pinfall from No. 12-ranked
Brandon Connor at 165 pounds. Connor needed only one takedown before scoring his team-leading fifth pin of the season. Once Connor put Colby Romjue on his back, it was only a matter of time, and despite a battle from Romjue, Connor's diligence resulted in six team points for the Marauders.
• Connor's win put the Marauders up 19-7 with three matches left, but only days earlier at Kutztown, Millersville had seen a lead slip away in this very section of the lineup. Newby was the unlikeliest of stoppers, as he entered the match with a 1-6 record. Usually at 174-pounder, Newby filled in at 184 because of the injury to
Anthony Giampietro. Newby fell behind 2-0 early, but turned the match with a reversal from the bottom position and four nearfall points mid-way through the second period. With momentum fully on his side, Newby continued on the attack in the third period with two takedowns. The second of which came with fewer than 10 seconds remaining, and those extra seconds helped him to exactly one minute of riding time and the first major decision of his career.
• Down seven points after two matches, Millersville got on the board with three points from its No. 1-ranked 133 pounder,
Devin Flannery. Flannery slogged through a defensive match-up with William Burgess, scoring a takedown in the second period, and Flannery's escape to start the third period was enough for a 3-2 win.
Tim Uhler also out-dueled Joel Cawoski at 141 pounds, getting a third period takedown for a 3-2 win.
Craig Cook, ranked No. 5 nationally, scored eight points in the third period to give Millersville needed bonus points with a 16-4 major decision.
• Tuckey kept it rolling for the Marauders at 157. Jimmy Baxter got an early takedown, but Tuckey out-wrestled the Griffin the rest of the way. A takedown in the second period put Tuckey in control, and Baxter had no answer, ceding two penalty points for stalling to Tuckey in the period.
REACTION FROM COACH JERRY BOLAND
• On Tuckey's wins in the last two duals: "We preach it all the time in our room, that no one is more important that the other guy. We all have equal stake in it. We have that tone in the room. Everybody knows their job, and that is to get better everyday and push the guy next to you. When you have that attitude, when it comes time for someone like Eli to step in, he's important. I can't be happier for Eli. He's had some adversity in his career, and today, he really pulled through."
• On Connor's pin: "When you win a big dual meet, you need a couple things to happen, and one of them is for your big guns to step up. Brandon and Craig did that today. Brandon got the stick right when we needed it."
• On Newby's effort: "Since day one he has battled adversity. He's done nothing but battle injury after injury, and now he's wrestling up for the team. We had a conversation the other day, and he's in a good head space right now, and I'm super excited for him and proud of him. It's nice when someone like him gets the job done."
