Volleyball finishes the weekend 3-1, suffering their first loss of the season

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. -  The Marauders finished the Marauder Clash Tournament going 3-1. Millersville saw their first loss of the season from the Falcons of Fairmont State, who saw a perfect 4-0 weekend.

Millersville (7-1) fought a tough battle against the Falcons, forcing the game to four sets. The Marauders turned right around to play Nyack (0-7) and defeated the Warriors in three-straight sets.

HOW IT HAPPENED
VS. FAIRMONT STATE (L, 13-25, W, 25-20, L, 22-25, L, 17-25)
  • Fairmont State held constant leverage over the Marauders through set one. The Falcons were first to score and were up 3-0 before Millersville scored their first point from a kill by Emma Ludwig. The Marauders kept the game close until Fairmont State went on a six point run, putting the Falcons up 14-5. Millersville inched their way as much as they could, getting within 10 points of the Falcons. Fairmont State's lead was too great and the set ended with a service error on Millersville.
  • The Falcons controlled set two in the beginning, going up 5-1. Millersville kept within close distance and a kill by Kylie Airesman started momentum which helped the Marauders go on a five point run and take the lead, 7-6. Fairmont State answered and the two teams fought back-and-forth for the lead. Millersville tallied four points on the Falcons which included a kill from Rose Vail and Ludwig, putting the Marauders up 15-11. Fairmont was able to get close but an attack error secured the 25-20 win for Millersville.
  • Set three started off even between the two teams. The battle for the lead continued and Millersville scored four points in a row, leading 10-7. The Marauders held their ground and were able to go up 20-18 on the Falcons. The persistence of Fairmont State allowed them a four point run, putting them ahead by two points. A kill by Kylie Airesman got Millersville within one point of the Falcons, but was not enough for the set and the Falcons ended up on top, 25-22.
  • A strong start to set four was enough momentum for the Falcons to secure the win over Millersville. The Falcons five point run was broken up by a kill from Airesman, but Fairmont kept the ball rolling and created a nine point cushion. Millersville couldn't get closer than five points in set four. Fairmont State ended the match victorious, 25-17.

REACTION FROM HEAD COACH BRIAN SMITH
  • On the match against Fairmont State: "We knew Fairmont would likely be our toughest match and we were excited to be challenged as we develop and prep for conference play. I felt we started slow, improved as the match progressed and learned some things. I believe they came here 5-0 and left 9-0 so good contest for us."
  • On the teams overall weekend performance: "I'm happy with the 3-1 record for the weekend. I felt pretty good after last weekend's 4-0 start that we could pick up 2 wins this weekend so 3-1 and better competition is a good weekend for any team this early."
  • Preparation for another busy weekend ahead: "I think the team has been preparing well. We are doing a lot of things well so we will focus on some new things offensively this coming week."
