Dalstad gets 1,000th dig as Marauders sweep Jefferson

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Late rallies in each of the first two sets and domination in the third led Millersville to a 25-20, 25-23, 25-14 sweep of visiting Jefferson Tuesday night in Pucillo Gymnasium.

It was an impressive win for the now 10-7 Marauders as they knocked off a Jefferson team that had recently won nine of its previous 10 and owned two wins over PSAC East programs. But the Marauders recorded double-digit kills in every set led by Laurel Samko's 12 and and 10 from Kylie Airesman. Airesman played nearly error-free volleyball as only one of her 24 swings went as a hitting error, and she posted a .375 hitting percentage.

The Marauders' defense was also on point as four different players recorded at least eight digs, and Becca Dalstad's 20 pushed her into the record books as she became the 11th player in program history to record 1,000 digs in a career.

The defense extended to the net as well where Millersville totaled seven blocks. Rylee Thomas had a hand in four.

HOW IT HAPPENED
•  The set one score stood at 18-18 until Millersville went on a five-point run. Kills from Airesman and Rose Vail sparked the run. Emma Ludwig added an ace and Vail and Thomas stuffed a Rams' attack to make the score 23-18. After trading points, Millersville closed the set one win on a Jefferson error.
•  A back-and-forth second set featured 15 ties and five lead changes. Neither team held a lead of more than two points until Millersville closed by scoring points on the set's final three rallies. Trailing 23-22, Ludwig set up Airesman for a kill. Mya Cascario found an open space, and then the Marauders went back to Airesman for set point.
•  The third set was all Millersville from the start. The Marauders scored five of the set's first six points and led by no fewer than four points the rest of the way. Millersville closed out the match by scoring six of the final seven points, five of which came with Cascario serving. Once again, it was Airesman who closed the set with a kill. Millersville hit .346 in the set while Jefferson struggled, posting seven kills to eight errors.

REACTION FROM COACH BRIAN SMITH
•  On the team's performance: "I was very pleased. We started out passing really well. We hit well. We know we have some tough PSAC East teams ahead this weekend, so it benefits us to have a good performance tonight."
•  On the performance of the hitters: "I think all of our pin hitters all had good matches hitting the ball. I was pleased all the way around.
•  On Dalstad getting 1,000 digs: "It means a lot to her and to the team as well. They celebrate those milestones because they are all a part of the process. Becca is in her third year so to get to that mark so quickly is great. I'm happy she reached it here at home."

NOTES
•  Millersville improved to 9-7 all-time against Jefferson and snapped the Rams' two-match winning streak in the series. Millersville has won the last three meetings at Pucillo Gymnasium.
•  Dalstad's next milestone is 1,113, which is the dig total of Kathy Howard (2005-08), who holds 10th place in the Millersville record books.

UP NEXT
• Millersville plays back-to-back PSAC East matches at home on Friday and Saturday against Shippensburg and Shepherd.
