MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – After a pair of ties in the Millersville men's soccer team's previous two matches, the Marauders sailed their way back into the win column Wednesday night with a convincing 2-0 shutout over East Stroudsburg.
Millersville (4-1-3, 2-0-2 PSAC East) started the scoring off with just over 10 minutes remaining in the first half as
Spencer Shortt sent a cross into the Warrior box that found
Christian Vorchheimer, who was able to direct it towards the left foot of
Zander Leik for a Marauder goal.
The game would remain scoreless until the 74' when
Mike Kreider sent a pass through several Warriors to a wide open Vorchheimer in front of the East Stroudsburg (3-5, 2-1 PSAC East) net. The sophomore would gather himself before firing a shot past a diving Warrior keeper to give 'Ville an insurance goal, which also marked the first score of his career.Â
Bobby Bosch, who recorded a career-high 11 saves in the shutout victory, stopped the Warriors' final three chances after Vorchheimer's score. He now holds a 4-1-3 record in goal this season.
Millersville sits in second place early in PSAC East play behind only West Chester. The Marauders are set to face off with the Golden Rams on Saturday, Sept. 24 on the road.
POSTGAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON
Overall thoughts on the win:Â "A much more solid performance and more satisfying result today. We showed a lot more of what we are capable of today, so it was very pleasing to see a positive reaction from the team after last week's games. There are still things to improve upon, but we took a step in the right direction today."
On the defense:Â "Defensively we did well today. Of course, there were too many shots given up and saves made but many of them were not too threatening. Having said that, we will have to improve in that area moving forward."
On Saturday's match against West Chester:Â "West Chester is a very strong team and the team to beat right now. Today will help our confidence going into that game, but we will have to be on top of our game to get a positive result. We will enjoy this result tonight then get back to work tomorrow."
