Men's Soccer earns one point at West Chester

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Matt Lynch scored a go-ahead goal in the 14' of the Millersville men's soccer team's Saturday matchup against West Chester – the one-goal advantage would only hold until the 58' as West Chester sent in an equalizer that would lead to the Marauders' fourth draw of 2022, third in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division play.

The Marauders were dominate early, sending three shots at First Team All-PSAC goalkeeper, Daniel Good in the first 12 minutes of action with two landing on-goal. Lynch was able to beat Good on the Marauders' fourth shot attempt to earn an early lead on the road.

The Millersville (4-1-4, 2-0-3 PSAC East) offense got away from attacking during the remaining 30 minutes of the first half as West Chester (7-1-1, 4-0-1 PSAC East) sent the only three shots on-frame in that time, with goalkeeper Bobby Bosch stopping all three.

The biggest blow to the Marauders occurred in the 44', just seven seconds before halftime. Richy Valverde was handed a straight red card, leaving Steve Widdowson's group to defend their one-goal lead for 45 minutes without an 11th man.

The Marauders were up for the task early in second half play as Bosch made three early saves in the half to keep the Golden Rams scoreless; however, West Chester would take advantage of the man down in the 58' and even the score at 1-1.

The 10-man Marauders were able to fight off West Chester for the remainder of regulation to earn one point in the PSAC East standings. 'Ville now sits in second place behind only West Chester with nine points to the Golden Rams' 13.

POSTGAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON
Overall thoughts on the result: "We are a little disappointed with the result. However, playing down a man for a full half made things difficult, so a tie isn't the worse thing. I think in both halves we played very well, and we remained positive and ambitious throughout regardless of their numerical advantage. I think overall we can be happy with the performance and taking a point from the best team in the conference after playing 45 mins with 10 men."

On the quick turnaround next week: "We have a quick turnaround now to our non-conference game on Tuesday. It is an important game, and we need the result, but it will also allow us to juggle the line up a bit and give some other players opportunities to start and get more minutes. It is exciting as we can manage our roster and gives me a chance to see what other guys can bring in different situations. I'm looking forward to seeing their performances, as everyone continues to battle for playing time and move the team forward."
