Marauders give up late goal; End match in draw with Lock Haven

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Millersville came from behind twice in Saturday's match against reigning Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East champion Lock Haven, but it wouldn't be enough to secure a victory as the Bald Eagles scored an equalizing goal with five seconds remaining in the game that resulted in the Marauders' second draw of the week.

Millersville (3-1-3, 1-0-2 PSAC East) looked to be in control early, firing three shots on-goal during the first 16 minutes of action. However, one mistake led to the Bald Eagles taking a 1-0 lead in the 18', which was the visitor's first shot on goal.

The score remained in favor of Lock Haven (2-4-2, 0-1-2 PSAC East) until the 43' when Spencer Shortt headed in a cross from Zander Leik to knot the match at one.

Seven minutes into the second half, Devven Frey recorded a foul in the Marauder box, which resulted in Bobby Bosch having to face his second penalty kick of the season. Samuel Hershey was able to convert the PK to put Lock Haven back on top.

The Marauders would turn on the gas during the next six minutes of play as Matt Lynch headed in an equalizer in the 55' off a Shortt corner kick. Shortt followed the assist with his second goal of the match just three minutes later, taking a pass from Bob Hennessey and firing past the Bald Eagle keeper to put the Marauders in front with just over 30 minutes remaining.

Hennessey, one of Steve Widdowson's most talented midfielders, was handed back-to-back yellows just before the 70', causing the Marauders to play a man down for the final 20 minutes of play.

The Marauders almost completed that task , stopping five of Lock Haven's shots down the stretch. However, the Marauders gave up a game-tying goal to Hershey with five seconds remaining.

The Marauders will travel to East Stroudsburg and West Chester before coming home to face Goldey-Beacom on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at Pucillo Field.

POSTGAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON
Overall thoughts on the result: " Extremely frustrating. We are not showing the character required to be successful in this conference. It's ok to tie games, but the nature in which we are doing it right now is unacceptable. We are capable of so much more, so we need to find a way to reach our potential and improve our consistency."

On showing the ability to play from behind: " Good that we showed enough resiliency to come back, but we should not have put ourselves in those positions. We have to stop making our lives difficult, and that comes down to a lot of individual decisions that we aren't getting right. Until our overall decision making improves things will continue to be difficult. It comes down to an individual and collective responsibility to control games better with improved decision making and communication."
