MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - West Chester did what no other team has been able to do at Cooper Park this season and that was take two from the Millersville Marauders. West Chester won the opener 11-2 and then used a nine-run eighth inning to run away with a 10-1 win in the nightcap.
West Chester's series sweep marked the first time since 2018 and the second time in the last 502 games that Millersville has lost three in a row against a PSAC East opponent. West Chester's 21 runs were the most Millersville has allowed in a doubleheader since 2017. The biggest impact came in the PSAC East standings, as West Chester's (24-9, 12-6) three wins pulled it within a game of the first-place Marauders (31-11, 13-5).
Miscues plagued the Marauders all day as they committed seven fielding errors, walked 11 batters, hit nine and threw six wild pitches in the 16 innings. Millersville had not committed four errors since the season opener, and had not allowed nine runs in 20 games. In the opener, West Chester scored its 11 runs on 11 hits, four errors, seven walks and four hit batters. The leadoff hitter reached base in six of seven innings, and only once did the batter reach on a hit. In game two, West Chester turned a 1-0 game into a 10-run lead. The first three runners reached without a hit, and Sean Szestowicki hit a grand slam. Later in the inning, Mike Ferarra hit a three-run homer, bringing in three unearned runs.
The Golden Rams needed just two pitchers to navigate the 16 innings as Braeden Fausnaught tossed a seven-inning complete game in the opener. Millersville's runs came on an RBI double from
Keegan Soltis in the fourth and a fielder's choice from
Thomas Caufield in the sixth. Joe Sperone needed just 106 pitches to spin nine innings in game two. The only run he allowed came in the ninth off
Luke Trainer's RBI double. While Sperone was efficient, Millersville's five pitchers combined to throw 176 pitches.
