Marauders fight past Kutztown on the road

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Millersville women's lacrosse team came away with a 13-10 victory over Kutztown on Saturday afternoon. The contest stayed relatively close throughout, as both teams entered the first half in a tie and the Marauders were able to edge out the Golden Bears by three scores in the second.

Gillian Zimmerman led the Marauders with five goals, while Kristi Kada and Amanda Juliano followed with two each. Morgan Scott recorded nine 13 in goal, she moves to 9-5 in net following the win.

Zimmerman moves to 10th all-time in career goals with 124, passing up Jeanine Parrish ('90) who finished her four-year career with 118 goals. Zimmerman now eyes the No. 9 spot which currently belongs to Caitlin Shannon ('14) with 125 goals.  

The Marauders improve to 9-5 overall and 5-4 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East play, while Kutztown falls to 4-10 and 1-8 in PSAC East play.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 • First-half play was very evenly played between the two PSAC foes, as both teams scored five goals to come out of the half in a five-five tie. Zimmerman led the Marauders with two goals in the first 30 minutes of play, while Morgan Scott recorded nine of her saves in that time.  
• The Marauders began second-half play by taking a quick two-goal lead courtesy of goals from Zimmerman and Kada. 'Ville would go on to hold this lead throughout the second half, stopping any chance the Golden Bears had of a comeback.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Zimmerman fired a team-high nine shots, seven on goal. Grace Cobaugh and Juliano followed with five each.  
• Kada and Zimmerman recorded a team-high three ground balls each.
• Juliano dished out a team-high three assists, Ashlyn Simonetti followed with two of her own.
• Millersville was 16-20 on clears, while Kutztown was 15-16.
• Millersville committed 19 turnovers, while Kutztown committed 14.  
• The Golden Bears recorded more ground balls than the Marauders, 21-19.   
 
REACTION FROM HEAD COACH CINDY WILSON
• On the team's play today: "The team put the pieces together in the second half to get the conference win today. They worked together to get the job done."
• On the final stretch of PSAC games: "Every game is important through this last stretch. We are in a good position to fight for a postseason bid and we need to continue to control the things we can control."

UP NEXT
• Millersville will head home on Tuesday, April 19 for a chance to sweep its season series with the Bloomsburg Huskies.
