Marauders sweep Mansfield to remain perfect in PSAC East play

MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Millersville University softball team (16-14, 4-0 PSAC) swept their doubleheader against the Mansfield Mountaineers on Tuesday afternoon, remaining perfect in conference play.
 
Millersville recorded a combined 29 hits over the doubleheader, highlighted by a six-hit day from Aleese Angelo. Alex Schaefer earned the win in game one with a complete game effort in the circle and picked up her second save of the season in game two.
 
GAME ONE: Millersville 13 – Mansfield 3 (five innings)
  • Angelo opened the scoring for the Marauders with a solo home run in the top of the first.
  • With the game tied 1-1 in the fourth, Gabi Turner connected on an RBI single, giving 'Ville the lead for good.
  • The Marauders would record their best inning of the season in the fifth, scoring 11 runs on nine hits. Sam Fried, Alyssa Stover, Angelo, Turner, Gabby D'Ottavio, Hunter Little, Alexis Harkins, and Marli Schreiner all connected on run scoring hits for 'Ville. Harkins and Schreiner each crushed home runs in the monster inning.
  • The Marauders would win by ten after giving up two runs in the bottom of the fifth, earning a mercy rule victory for the sixth time this season. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Millersville outhit Mansfield 15 to five.
  • The 11 runs scored in the fifth is the highest single inning total for the Marauders this season.
  • Schaefer improved to 7-5 after tossing a complete game in the circle. She allowed just one earned run while picking up five strikeouts.
  • Angelo and D'Ottavio led the way for the Marauder offense, collecting three hits each. Harkins also had a multi-hit game, collecting a pair of hits in the win.
  • Harkins recorded a team high three RBIs, while Angelo, Little, and Schreiner all had two RBI games. 
GAME TWO: Millersville 9 – Mansfield 6
  • Mansfield took a 1-0 lead in the first, scoring on Marauder starter Morgan Crutcher.
  • The Marauder offense scored four runs in the third, taking a 4-1 lead. Turner opened the scoring with an RBI single, plating Angelo. D'Ottavio gave 'Ville its first lead of the game as she connected on a two-run single. Fried added to the lead as she drove in Little for a two-out RBI.
  • Mansfield cut into the Millersville lead with a two spot in the bottom of the third, making it a 4-3 game.
  • Turner made it a 5-3 Marauder lead with a pull side single in the fifth, scoring Breanna Clayton.
  • Mansfield tied the game at five with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Mountaineers retook the lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth, going ahead 6-5.
  • The Marauders tied the game in the sixth on an RBI double by Turner. 'Ville took the lead for good in the top of the seventh on a three-run home run from Clayton.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Crutcher went six innings in the circle, allowing five earned runs while walking one batter and picking up five strikeouts.
  • Schaefer, who started game one, came in for the bottom of the seventh and secured the sweep as she collected her second save of the season.
  • Millersville outhit Mansfield 14 to 11.
  • The Marauder offense recorded five extra base hits, including four doubles and a home run.
  • Angelo and Turner each had three hit games while Fried added a pair of hits. Turner and Clayton each drove in three runs.
UP NEXT
The Marauders return to action on Friday April 15, for a doubleheader at Shippensburg. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
