Ninth-inning rally, Trainer's walk-off help Marauders to extra-inning win over East Stroudsburg

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Trailing No. 29 East Stroudsburg by three runs in the bottom of the ninth, No. 21 Millersville rallied to send the game into extra innings, and in the bottom of the 10th, Luke Trainer delivered a two-out, walk-off double for a 7-6 PSAC East win Friday at Cooper Park.

Millersville (21-5, 7-0 PSAC East) extended its winning streak to 12 in the most dramatic of fashions. Keegan Soltis ripped a two-run, bases-loaded double in the bottom of the ninth, and Cole Houser tied the game at 6-6 with an RBI fielder's choice. Millersville reliever Christian Wingard (3-0) kept the score tied in the top of the 10th, setting the stage for Trainer's heroics in the bottom of the inning.

Trainer went 1-for-3 but reached base four times, drawing three walks. Thomas Caufield, who scored the game-winning run, went 2-for-4 and drew two walks. His two runs scored came in the final two innings, and it was his 10th-inning walk and two-out stolen base with two outs that gave him the chance to score from second on Trainer's hit.

It was Millersville's first extra-inning game of the season, and the Marauders improved to 4-0 in games decided by one run.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
• Caufield put the Marauders up 2-0 in the third with a first-pitch single, but ESU tied it on a Jeremy Piatkiewski two-run single in the fourth and took the lead on Anthony Torreallus' two-run homer in the fifth. ESU's lead extended to 6-3 on Jack Rothlenhausler's two-run home run in the seventh.
• Millersville started the ninth with hitters 2-3-4 in the lineup coming to the plate, and Bren Taylor, Caufield, and Trainer all worked full counts against reliever Justin Guidos. Taylor doubled on a low rocket just inside third base before Caufield and Trainer drew back-to-back walks. Soltis, whose called strike three ended the seventh with two runners on base, responded by pulling an 0-2 pitch down the left field line, bringing Millersville within one. After a strikeout and intentional walk to pinch hitter Pete Vaccaro, Houser hit a slow grounder to shortstop but beat out the double-play attempt. Trainer scored to tie the game.
• In the top of the 10th, Wingard overcame a leadoff double from Brainy Rojas with a fly-out and back-to-back strikeouts to the middle of ESU's order. Losh started Millersville's half of the 10th after being hit by a pitch, but the promising momentum was cut down when ESU's Nate Fiala got Bren Taylor to bounce into a 4-6-3 double play. Caufield, however, drew a four-pitch walk and stole second base, and Trainer pushed the 2-2 offering into the left-center field gap. The ball hopped to the wall, and Caufield scored without a throw to the plate.
• Millersville starter Ben Wilchacky took a no-decision after allowing two runs on four hits and four walks in four innings. So did ESU's Chase Nowak, who allowed three unearned runs in seven innings. In two starts against the PSAC East, Nowak has thrown 14 innings without allowing an earned run. Millersville received two strong relief innings from Harry Prince, who struck out three without giving up a hit in the eighth and ninth.

POSTGAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH JON SHEHAN
• On the team's rally: "Nowak threw a great game today. I thought he was really tough. We had him on the ropes some early, hit balls hard straight into the wind, and he did a good job getting into a rhythm and making some quality pitches. Keegan Soltis comes in after a tough at bat before and he doubles and puts us in position. Houser had a great day at the plate too. Just putting the ball in play, giving us a chance. In the 10th, Luke stayed on the change-up really well. It's a good team win.
• On late-inning pitching: "You can't forget about Harry Prince. He came in and did a great job. It was probably his best outing of the year. He really looked like himself. Then Wingard came in and did a fantastic job."
• On Trainer's final at-bat: "He's a professional hitter. He has great bat-to-ball skills and covers the plate well. He hit a tough pitch too--a change-up down and away. He stayed on it and hit it in the gap."

NOTES
• Trainer's double was the 40th of his career, moving him into a tie with Millersville head coach Jon Shehan for ninth place on Millersville's career list. Trainer also moved into a tie with Ben Snyder (2016-19) for fourth place in career RBIs with 154.
