Marauders ride big game two to split doubleheader

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Millersville Marauders split their Friday doubleheader, falling to Notre Dame College (Ohio) 4-7 before defeating Wheeling University by a final of 11-5.
 
Millersville recorded a season high 16 hits in the win against Wheeling, as the Marauders scored 10+ runs for the fifth time this season.
 
With the split, Millersville stands at 7-7 through its first 14 games. The Marauders went 7-4 at neutral site venues during their three-week road stand to open the season. Millersville has had plenty of power to open the season, as the Marauders lead all of DII in home runs per game with 1.50.
 
GAME ONE: NOTRE DAME 7 – MILLERSVILLE 4
HOW IT HAPPENED         
  • NDC took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, scoring on Marauder starter Morgan Crutcher.
  • Aleese Angelo gave the Marauders the lead in the bottom of the inning, blasting a two-run home run to put 'Ville ahead 2-1.
  • The Marauder lead wouldn't last, as NDC took the lead for good in the third, putting up another three runs off of Crutcher. The Falcons scored in four straight frames as they plated all seven runs between the third and fifth innings.
  • Millersville scratched out an unearned run in the third as Sam Fried scored on an error.
  • The Marauders added another run in the seventh as Bryn Spoerl scored on a fielder's choice, cutting the Marauder deficit to three. The 'Ville comeback would fall short as the Marauders would end the game with the tying run at the plate. 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • NDC outhit Millersville 13 to five.
  • Angelo led the Marauder offense, going 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored.
  • Alyssa Stover reached base twice with a single and walk.
  • Crutcher saw her record fall to 2-3 on the season after allowing four runs to score over 2 2/3 innings of work.
  • Breanna Clayton threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief as she picked up a pair of strikeouts.
 
GAME TWO: MILLERSVILLE 11 – WHEELING 5
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Millersville struct first against the Cardinals, as Gabby D'Ottavio drove in Angelo to open the scoring. A bases loaded walk to Kendra Bumgardner would put Millersville ahead 2-0 after the top of the first.
  • Marli Schreiner added to the Marauder lead, blasting a leadoff home run in the second to put 'Ville ahead 3-0 as she connected on her first long ball of the season.
  • A Marauder pitching change in the second opened the door for Wheeling, as the Cardinals plated three runs to tie the game up 3-3.
  • Millersville responded in the third, when Stover doubled to bring in Alexis Harkins, giving Millersville the lead for good.
  • A bases clearing double by D'Ottavio in the fourth blew the game open, with Millersville going ahead 7-3.
  • Millersville would add another pair of runs in the fifth, expanding the lead to six as Schreiner and Gabi Turner both came around to score.
  • Wheeling would close the gap in their half of the fifth, scoring another pair of runs on a two-run homerun as the Cardinals cut the Marauder lead back to four.
  • Millersville added their final insurance runs in the top of the seventh, as Harkins delivered on an RBI single, plating Alexis Staniec. Bumgardner added the last Marauder run as she brought Hunter Little in on an RBI groundout.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Marauders recorded a season high 16 hits in the win.
  • Millersville scored in six of the seven innings, with their only empty frame coming in the sixth.
  • This was the fifth time this season Millersville has scored 10 or more runs. The 11 runs scored is the second highest total of the season for the Marauders.
  • Little, Harkins, and Schreiner all had three hits at the plate for 'Ville.
  • D'Ottavio led the way in RBIs with four, while collected a pair of hits.
  • Fried went 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring twice.
  • Millersville tied a season high in doubles with four.
  • With her three-hit effort, Little raised her average to a team best .424 while also increasing her slugging percentage to a team high .788.  
 
REACTION FROM HEAD COACH JEN PROBST:
On Angelos' day at the plate: "Aleese has so much power. It was great seeing her back to what she does best, driving the ball."
 
On the offensive outburst against Wheeling: "We really focused on responding from the loss in game one and putting the pressure on their defense every inning. We had a lot of great quality at bats throughout the game including Marli's first collegiate home run."
 
On the dozen games in Florida: "It was a great week in Florida. We learned a lot and will be ready to build off our wins and losses back north."
 
UP NEXT
The Marauder head to New Jersey on Tuesday, March 15 for a doubleheader against Georgian Court with first pitch set for 2 p.m. The Marauder home opener comes 48 hours later as Millersville welcomes Goldey-Beacom to Seaber Stadium for a doubleheader.
